If this 6 month old pup DOES have one moderate & one severe hip, the owner needs to contact the breeder about a replacement puppy, & consider euthanasia for this one.  If the pup only had one bad hip I would feel differently.  The thing is, none of know the breeding on this particular dog, we don't know if the breeder xrays breeding stock, whats in the lineage, etc..  Unfortunately, it very well could be this breeder might not have anything better as far as hips go.

So, I'm putting the cart before the horse.  Right now he should heed the advise of those posters who suggested sending the x-rays to OFA, as well as take the xrays to another vet for a 2nd opinion.  Matt talks about going to a "certified" vet, but I am unaware of any xray reading certification available, hopefully he can elaborate.

Thanks so much guys for the input.  I will pass this along to him.  I have learned a lot .  I have been fortunate enough not to have HD in my GDS.  He (family friend) has an appointment for Oct. 1 with an Ortho at UofM and he is taking the xrays and doing an indept consult.  They have had the puppy since 8 weeks and giving him back to the breeder and putting him down is not an option - these people are in it for the long haul............they will do what they have to do.  They have contacted the breeder.  I know there are no guarentees in life - however these folks went and interviewed 3 breeders and did not care what the cost was - and now this happens.  He is the sweetest boy ever.

If you have any information how to cut and copy the x-ray on to you to read - fill me in.

Yes, it's really a shame.  Unfortunately, even the best bred pup can be the one to end up with bad hips.  I almost switched to schipperkes because of it = but then I came to my senses.  I'm sure we will all be pulling for the little guy, hopefully he's poorly positioned or the hips aren't as bad as the first vet said.  Please let us know what  the orthopod at university thinks.

I never would x-rayed my dogs until one year. Why I should do x-ray before? With one year old it will be sure - not before. Until one year I do what I can - to grow up healthy. My experiences over 19 years...
