blitz, i'm laughing over your last post.  :)   i've got a dog that will not platz.  just plain won't do it.  to him, that is just too much submission and he wants no part of it.  i offered 50 bucks at my training group to anyone who could platz this dog.  i had a couple of macho, know-it-all volunteers.  they tried everything from food to laying on top of him........no platz!   well, a couple of years later he had to have some minor surgery and had to be put under.  that dog fought the anesthesia like no other.  finally, he platzed, but you guessed it -----it cost me a hell of a lot more than 50 bucks.  hahahaha.   i love this dog!

just my 2 cents on the hip xrays..........

it is my personal opinion that the xrays are nothing but a tool for decision making.  for the breeder, for the owner.  ofa certifications are no kind of guarantee.  some folks insist on them.  personally, i like to see the xrays myself and draw my own conclusions.  when you are talking about working dogs, you are talking about much more than hips.  that's just part of the picture.  one piece in the puzzle.  i don't think that a dog's value should be limited to just one factor.  anesthesia or not?  that depends on the dog.  whatever it takes to get a good picture.....something that will be accurate enough to form an opinion from.

I can't say I ever met many dogs I didn't like, Ziegenfarm, but good old Blackie, a police force drop out, was one of them. He was great with his family, but instant death to anyone else.  Your dog sounds like he had a mind of his own . Most vets I worked for adjusted their bills accordingly LOL.

I agree 100% that  hips are one part of the dog and the priority assigned by each breeder will be the result of what else they are looking for in breeding stock. When I bred it was for AKC shows, so my  priorities were top conformation, good temperaments, sound movement and normal hips. If I'd have bred GSD's instead, I'm pretty sure I'd have had different priorities and hips would be maybe 3rd or 4th on the gotta have list.
