Wolves have heat cycles once a year because there is only enough food avalible for the mother to feed the pups once a year, in spring. Now that we feed our dogs quality food all year round, they can now support a litter all year round. This is why I think dogs began to have heat cycles twice a year. I don't see anything wrong with brreeding a bitch every heat if she is healthy, except if she is getting too old. Better to stop while the going's good. Human females naturally stop having reproductive cycles, I don't know about dogs.

I agree with those that acknowledge that giving birth is hard on a body, animal or human. Remember, vets also advocate feeding Science Diet and Iams, and many are absolutely opposed to RAW, why should I assume that just because a repro vet said it's good for the dog that my dog should be treated like a brood mare? I once took an injured animal to a vet to have an abcess drained. Without anesthesia, he had two assistance hold the cat while he slit the abcess and tied a drain through it. When I showed concern about the animals suffering, he promptly told me that animals don't feel pain, and gave the drain an aggressive tug to prove it to me. Vets don't kow everything.

The most important thing is: with a good female who brings good progeny  you should breed every heat, if she is healthy then its Ok

females who bring shi..     from them is one litter already enough

Breeding a bitch every season? Who the heck can find  proper homes for so many puppies?

Old German saying, possibly from Stephanitz, paraphrased:

If you don't breed the bitch every heat cycle, all you get is a fat bitch.

Shelley...I also remember that saying from Stephanitz's book....."Consider breeding as a form of  WORK ...If not bred, your bitch will gain nothing but FAT..."  So is that why we have  prostitutes and call boys in the society ???   I consider myself a Callboy since i'm working in a call centre...

have a nice day... :) marci

So I say... let the bitch have her sweet time but limit the progeny to a maximum of six pups only... this way i

FM2410 Thanks for posting this topic not only is it interesting  to see how people feel about it but also sheds a new light on how we look at things. I was raised with every other heat and only a few years ago did I find out it was better to breed back to back on the first and second litter. Now it is every litter. Still have a hard time thinking that way but after reading all the post and talking not only with the kennel posted but other breeders I am starting to understand more and why.

By the way Mike was very knowledgable and took the time out to talk with me in more details about his program. I was very impressed .

If I could get that much for pups, I'd breed my bitch every heat too, until her uterus fell out! At least Kreative Kennels breeds nice dogs and not crap.
