I read the first post on this thread, viewed the video and skipped all comments to post my thought as I see it. This video wasn't asked to be made. The bad guy had choices and he refused. The bad guy said he'll shoot the dog. To me the video looks like longshot fire. The handler sent the dog, the dog was shot and the bad guy was shot.  It's all in the line of duty, and to make it sound staged for a killing of a dog is just ridiculous and that's how I understood the first post.

I have respect for that Police Dept, the Military involved and the K9 Officer for doing what they did, regardless of other people's propaganda. When you chase bad guys, it's either them or you. And I choose us. There was Honor served that day against a bad guy with a gun, and if noone here can see it, then sorry for them.

I'm sure it was a lesson learned for the K9 Handler, next time in that Dept. they will spare the dog I'm sure of it. Of course then the Honor of the Dept would have failed completely against a gunman in the same situation. Now, I'll go read the posts above.

Bull, Baby Eagle.  You read every post----and, as you are referring to my post (stupid move) only a twit could possibly think I thought that video was staged.
If I remember correctly, you called me a bad person because I didn't like seeing a dog flanked on another video.  I'd pul up that  thread, but it was deleted. I let that one go........but after seeing this video.......am in no mood for you.  Find another person to twit.......

Watched Cops one nite. They chased a car that crashed in the median. Guy got out and ran toward the oncoming traffic on the other side of the highway with many officers on location. This was a 60 - 70 mph plus highway. LEO K9 "releases and sends his dog in the direction of the suspect and the oncoming traffic and around the many Police vehicles that were in the middle of the highway". Im sorry but this cop had no consideration whatsoever for his K9 partner sending him around vehicles and into hi speed traffic on the other side of the roadway. I certainly hoped the dog escaped injury and was not hit by a vehicle.

As a retired K-9 handler, I can't help but answer this thread. "Would you send your dog?". My answer is I don't have enough information to honestly answer that question!. We only know what the video tells us. From our experience we know that video does not tell the whole story. With that said, I can tell you when I would have sent my parter. Notice I said partner and not "dog". My partner was part of my family. He was an equal in my car. I would not risk his life unnecessarily. I know my partner would have given his life to protect me. I also know I would have given my life to protect him. My partner was trained to protect me and my fellow officers. I would sarifice my partner only to save the life of a human being, be that  a fellow officer or civilian. I watched the video and put myself in that officers position. I cannot second guess him because I know the pain that he felt holding his dead partner. I would have sent my partner to save a fellow officer. I can only guess that the K-9 was sent to determine if the bad guy had a weapon? The officers did not want to shoot an unarmed suspect and (I'm guessing) sent the dog instead of an officer. There can be no excuse for the officers firing while the K-9 was deployed. I can only say that had this happened in my department, the officers would no longer be employed. My heart goes out to this brave K9 and to his partner that will remember him the rest of his life. Is the dog considered "equipment"? I never cried when I lost my baton or my handcuffs.

There was another K9 barking in the background after the first one was shot.  Opens up allot of other questions.  Speculation about why K9s were on the scene in the first place.  Were they on the initial apprehension or brought in later?   Definitely not enough information given by such a short video for anyone to know what all the circumstances were.  A very sad thing to have happen for the handler, the shooter and for his whole department.
