For me it's one word...Versatility!
No other breed can match the GSD's Versatility, from Police dog to Therapy dog...SAR dog to seeing eyedog...

GSD fan I take it it's the same dog :) Love the vid with the little girl singing to him .
My female Manta was giving birth and the yard was flooding to the point the Firedepartment came. Anyway long story short Manta was whelping downstairs in the basement so I took her up stairs into the kitchen to finish given birth. I was to affraid the basement would flood and later it did !! next day my 18 month old grand daughter came . Isabelle sat on the dog bed and Manta scooted over close enough to lay her head in the babys lap while nursing her own babies. I grew up with a GSD so did my children and some of the best memories I have is when I finally got my dog ! My father would not allow anything else in the house I wanted a dog bad but was very young he said when you a bit older you will get a Shepherd . well at 11 I finally got my dog !! We named her after my fathers childhood GSD Donner meaning Thunder in english !! Well from the day I came home from gym class at 11 years old and finding this awesome GSD pup at my home I was hooked and it turned into a passion !! My father told me right then and there this is a GSD u must excerise this dog and u must train this dog . Being in germany where every little village /town has it's club I soon joined the local VDH Club . Only sport back then was schutzhund :)
A good GSD can not be beat :)

I am 15 years old, and i got Jake when I was 8. My dad says he got Jake to be his dog but oh well. Jake died when he was six, so I set out to get another. I got Sarah about a year and six months ago, and she is the greatest. Jake would let anyone come and pet and play fetch with him, Sarah won't let you walk by the yard. My question is; Why did they even breed other dogs?

Was hooked on in Tin Tin as a kid. Mom would never allow me to have a real dog. Oh a yorkie was ok, but nothing larger I spent days and nights with my invisible German Shepherd who went every where with me. One day, in the middle of a horrific NY city snow storm mom took me to the doctor. I cried pittifully , the dog is outside and its soo cold,, we must go gome. Must have been so convinving that the nurse gave us permission to bring "shep" in. Much to her suprise there was no shep, only in my imagination.
Mom's vet had a very large male shepherd that he took with him on house calls (woops, guess I am dating myself). what a great dog. She stayed under the exam table and was always protective but kind to me..
Well as I grew up for some strange reason I had Doboes, westies, collies and mutts. I never knew why I did not get my dream dog. My first german shepherd, Josie von Holtzland, introduced me to Schutzhund, AKC obedience , ,and therapy work.
In the past years I have never looked back! Anna, asisted me in my search for life at the World Trade Center on 911. Tragically she died 11 months later from what the experts refuse to acknowledge.
Today I share my home with a live find disaster dog,, Tango v. Kleym Hammer
Szara a water recovery dog and my lovely and distructive 21 months old certified cadaver dog, Kaylee z. Eurosportu.
Once a german shepherd enters your life..its all over.
Now , if I could find a guy who loves shepherds as much as I do LOL..a match made in heaven lol

When I was young my mom always had dogs and critters, cats, squirrels coons you name it. They were always rescues. A neighbor across the street had a GSD and it wouldnt let anyone near the yard, except me. The owner was a nurse and I was allergic to bees, anytime I got stung I went over there and she doctored me right up, the dog ( daisy) always sat right next to me. She always made me feel better, if I was crying she would nudge my hand and I would pet her and it made me feel better. We moved and I always asked mom for a GSD but it was not to be. When I married my first husband I got my first GSD. I loved her more than him! She was my whole world and the smartest entity I have ever had the pleasure of sharing my life with. Her name was Princess and she wore that name very regally. When she was 3 my oldest daughter was across the street playing and a large dog escaped from his yard. The kids that were playing started running towards the house scared. Princess went running across the street I am convinced to protect my daughter and a car speeding down the road didnt slow down. The vet did everything possible but he couldnt save her. I was devastated as was my family. I refused to own another GSD because none would ever hold up to Princess in my mind. 5 years ago I decided I was ready for another GSD. I found a beautiful 8 week old B&T thru someone that had an ad in the paper for a litter. Her name is Neechiwa. By the time she was 4 months old it was very apparent that she was bonded to my now former husband. When we seperated she stayed with him. I was shepherdless again. A good friend of mine had a beautiful GSD female and when I would go and visit she would always greet me at the gate and stay at my heels the entire time I was there. In the house she sat right next to me and didnt move unless I did. Kinda ticked her owner off a bit lol Her owner was in an accident and was unable to care for himself any longer, he had to go into assisted living as his condition deteriated daily due to a brain injury. Before he entered assisted living he asked me if I was interested in Xena since she had already adopted me and he knew I loved her like crazy.
She infuriates me every morning at 3:45 am when she decides it is time for mom to be out of bed and if I dont agree she just lays all of her weight across my chest, she is not a light dog to say the least lol It is summertime, I dont have to be up until 6 am, but she just doesnt care. She is used to me being up at 3:45 and thats the way its going to stay in her mind. Thats ok tho, only a couple of more months and I will have to be up early again. Tino has wormed his way into my heart just as fast as Xena did. No other breed of dog ( and I have had many) can compare to the intellegence, spirit, intuition or compassion that the GSD has. There will always be a GSD in my life in the future.

Loved Rin TIn Tin and Sgt. Preston of the Mounties. Have had either GSDs or Malamutes ever since.
Why GSDs? Because they are everything a dog should be.

BTW, so many of you have mentioned Rin Tin Tin, I thought I'd post this link, just in case you weren't aware his bloodline is still in existence: http://www.rintintin.com/index.htm Daphne Hereford doesn't show the dogs, but she does donate them to local agencies for SAR, police work and service dogs for kids (Rinty for Kids).
This has to be one of the oldest lines of GSD's in existence, especially in N. America. Interesting to notice the colours, isn't it? There have often been white dogs in the Rin Tin Tin lineage, which is probably why Daphne didn't hesitate to breed to Hoofprint on the Move when she needed to do an outcross. (Joanne Chanyi, who owns Hoofprint Kennels is VERY careful about monitoring and testing her dogs to eliminate genetic problems in her lines:.http://www.hoofprint.ws/genetics.html)

Like what JONAH and PSP said...the GSD is the TOTAL DOG...
What else can you look for in the K-9 (canine) world... dogs ears being cropped especially for work ( they wanted prick ears to give the BATMAN -shock effect )... "why let the dogs suffer for mans likings..?" You want a dog with a long bushy tail that does not hit you in the face while still a kid... have a dog with fur you can cuddle like a teddy bear... a buddy... a best friend... your protector... ( I remember as a kid, I wanted a wolf to be my protector and sometimes acted as the bad guy with a Good Old Wolf to scare the skirts off Little Red Riding Hood ) A dog who can chase the bad guys and leave us alone kids to play in the backyard...These and all are not limited to my GSD... the total dog
