OK - so we have uncovered indiscriminate breeding with no thought or care for the puppies produced or the people with the heartache that buy them if hips are not good. Actually, it wasnt uncovered, as a post earlier said, Linedancer gave the information, so she must be ok about it.
However, let us not forget that we have people in our own breed - the German Shepherd Dog, that have no scruples either... we must all know people that we wish had never bred a litter of German Shepherd dogs - and who dont care a fig for the aftermath that they cause.... so its a level playing field.
Now lets get on. CAN WE ALL UNITE TO FORM TWO BREEDS WITH THE PERMISSION OF THE KENNEL CLUB. Lets stop calling it a split, because as a conversation I had this evening by telephone confirmed..... people are getting confused with SPLITTING from The Kennel Club and SPLITTING the two very different looking types which at the moment are all under one standard.
One could be Alsations - one could be German Shepherd dogs. It only needs doing with the K.C.`s blessing and on paper, because the rest is already done, we go to differing shows, we dont appreciate the others type of dog... we both have virtues and faults - and by being stuck together under the one breed we dont even like each other. Now I am not a great lover of Chinese Crested dogs (sorry if you have one) but I dont know any people who I resent in that breed - Why? because I am not lumped together with them, and know nothing of them. Wouldnt it be nice if Alsation enthusiasts and German Shepherd enthusiasts felt that way too? It can be done.. if we unite, and stop griping, and do something constructive on both sides to perhaps put this to the Kennel Club in a united manner. At present, nothing is being done in a united manner, and from both sides of the field, the Kennel Club are hearing of unrest - ever likely we have a bad name. Lets clean up our act, I would think Mr John McLain would be an excellent advocate for the Alsation fancier and for the German Shepherd Fancier Mr Brian Wootton. Both men are excellently thought of in their own breed (no i didnt make a mistake) and both men are articulate and very interesting to talk to.
Say they met - then they called a meeting for anyone interested singly, then they called a joint meeting, and then made representation to the Kennel Club with the backing of their respective types. - Two different Breed Standards, Two different breeds, less people trying to get in to one ring under the correct type of judge and getting dissappointed if they make a mistake one day and their top winning dog on one week-end becomes the bottom of the pile the next week. Even Crufts.... think of it..... we could have two differing breeds represented at Crufts, so we all wouldnt be looking to see if "its worth going" - to a very prestigious show in the dog world and for Joe Public. - am I being daft, or is that sense in a way??? Mo - PS I would be more than willing to contact John and Brian if there was support here to make them feel that it was a worthwhile task.

There are several breeds which to my untrained eye look similar but have there own breed standards eg huskies , spaniels to name but 2 off the top of my head.
I for one would support such an adult approach to splitting the breed to Alsations AND German Shepherd Dogs

I would be in favour of you approaching the people concerned, as you say the German Shepherd Dog and Alsatians are like two different breeds anyhow. The problems that may come will be from those currently breeding the two types together, which is limited anyhow.
Pam
Maybe DP or Ollie could split this topic into the two relevant converations.
