Smiley, what is the "mainstream GSD owner" ? That's a real question. The dogs I described do still exist...you just need to know where to look; a hint, it won't be on the competition field or in the conformation ring.

As for "falling out of favor", they haven't fallen out of favor by 90% of the people who talk to me about the GSD they want.

Another way of posing your question; is popularity based on advertising hype?

Let's look at this from a different angle, like looking at why did the Neanderthal became extinct....or did they just become absorbed into the Homo sapiens population?
Instead of; Where did the old style GSD go and do they still exist? Let's explore this: What is the modern life style of the GSd and what every day jobs are required of him compared the so- called " old style" GSD? That should give you some insight as to where to find the "old style" GSD. I hope you are asking about the inner substance (genotype) plus the outward, functional appearance (phenotype) instead of only the conformation.

A littke off the beaten path, as I was reading backward, but anyway, joan, that dog of yours that ran them deer, I bet that dog traveled well over 50 miles in it's pursuit of them deer.
Yesterday, I was talkung to some guys they were down the road from my house coyote hunting, they told me a few things that really surprised me,
first, the coyotes out in my yard are actually coyote/wolf hybrids. They sent them off for testing due to the large size, and
second, they hunt them with Plotthounds. I could here the dogs yowling for a while, than goes off Iinto the distance.
This guy says they have GPS devices on their dogs, and them dogs clocked in 37 miles, in just a few hour time slit,
    I said whoa!
alright, back to the the good ole days

Sun and Joan....yup!!!! Where are the farm dogs at!!!!!! That's what I am talking about!!!

Joan's quote..."They are dogs bred by people who could be called "unethical" by the gsd breeding cult purists for not titling; they work at maintaining "useful" dogs for themselves and discerning families; not dogs that are raised/trained then sold, or bred and sold pregnant; their dogs are family members, watch over the 'wife' and kids while the husband is at work; keep varmints out of the hen house; can fetch a bucket out of the bull pen, round up an escaped cow and calf and help get them back home. The "jobs" and usefulness of such a dog can go on for pages, but think you get my drift. And they live to be twelve and fourteen, not Drop dead at four or five."

Yes! Yes! Yes!!! I am ok with that...... :-)

Hello everyone! Sorry to barge in on the convo but i am only trying to help! There is a breeder I know that breeds the old style lines I believe you are looking for.  Normal proportions (not specialty modern made up shepherds) but straight backed strong working dogs. They specialize in health testing their dogs as well and are state, federally inspected kennel. www.swnebraska.com to view the website.  Hope this was helpful- good luck!

Hmm...I"d feel better about their website if they hadn't mis-spelled Canada twice on the same page!  Roll eyes  If they'd only done it once, I would have thought it was a typo!  What Smile
