I have had the pleasure of meeting, working with, and doing business with a number of the people on the invitee list.

Some of them are some of the most humble people I've ever met, and if profiteering and ego tripping is the larger concern, I think one has to look no further than the SV and its practices.

The hourly rate of some of the very "elitist, ego tripping showmen" you refer to are inferior to the point of embarrassment for the sport involved if tutoring on a for-fee basis is considered.

Case in point:  A particular "breeder" in the Chicago Area who focuses on "show" Shepherds sponsors a local "club".  Their racial prejudice aside, personally witnessed, is small compared to the fee structure they create for hiring a "helper" and charging on a per-bite per-dog basis. Their fees are 2-5 times the amount of what I've paid to train with some of the competitors invited.  This "club" sounds much like what you have in mind, in spirit or otherwise.

If I were to calculate Wallace's hourly rate based on the amount of time he spends with students on a weekend, I'd cry.  If I had to work as hard as Ivan and Carrie managing all his kennels while ensuring all his dogs are worked and consider the money made, I'd take up driving buses. I'll spare mentioning a few more.  Perhaps you can share with us what that "blessed little bitch" does in the daytime to be kept from being bored out of her wits and having her natural drives maintained?  Wait - let me guess - you are a card carrying PETA member and officer, ensuring the cruelty of animals is banished, right? And you don't eat chicken, either...

Do you believe the competitors will suddenly give up time they donate and be lured by the appeal of money?  Perhaps breeding and training "protection dogs" hasn't enlightened them to cash in breeding.  Shhhht!  Don't let the secret get out.

Some of the competitors are so flabbergasted by the SV practices that they simply choose to not compete in SV sponsored events, either because the breed is heading in the wrong direction under current tutelage, or because of the watering down of Schutzhund under the club as a whole.  The success of sports like Ring, Mondio, PSA and others demonstrate that the adequacy of the sport and its result on the breed are less than stellar.  The shrinking membership numbers are curious and telling.  Why sanction judges for participating in these events if it wasn't for revenue preservation of SV sanctioned events? It's about control, something I'm sure you're quite familiar with, Speaknow.  Spare me the education of Club dynamics and open membership.  The lecture is unnecessary.

Your comments regarding a "private, profit making venture freely advertising" are ill informed.  Every "3 phase training" event listed as a thread is for profit, with the poster or posting clubs sharing profits from participants.  It's called i-g-n-o-r-a-n-c-e, speaknow.  It's okay, you can admit it now.

Why the namecalling, out of curiosity, Speaknow?  Why refer to some on this board as rednecks, feral groupies or otherwise?  Let alone your gratuitous use of "night school?"  Did your mommy or daddy pay for your school?  Did they hope to relieve their inadequacies by having you become their sun, moon and stars?  My close psychiatrist date read your posts and referred to them as classic "Narcissistic Personality Disorder"...look it up.  You'll enjoy it.

It sounds as though you "generalize" (the very term you seem to dislike in your posts) that by having a for profit event it will encourage a structure that creates greater costs, ignoring that largely GSD's have unfortunately become a for-profit elite vehicle, sadly

Compare the prices of Malinois and see this, if you can peel yourself away from your sporadic club participation or your beloved bitch..

Was Carlos asking for  the approval of the SV or your opinion of it?  Hardly so.  Wake up and let some of us enjoy watching a good amount of masters with vastly different styles and skills demonstrate their best.  Some of them I am lucky enough to be called a friend to, and others to whom I am a customer of I'll gladly cheer for.

Enjoy the little bitch that stares at you so adoringly.  Methinks that short of the bitch and your mirror, adoring stares back at you are in dire short supply.

Give me a break! You really expect me to respond to yet another rambling, disconnected diatribe? Particularly since I’d already decided after last lengthy post that I’d had it with the whole topic. Tell you what. Have another go and arrange your feature-length emotive diatribe into some sort of much shorter rational order, leaving out the personal garbage and loaded rhetoric, and maybe we’ll actually get somewhere. Of course if you only just needed a good rant ...

Thank you, Speaknow!  I'm glad you now waved the white flag.  Your double standards are apparent.  Namecalling and loaded rethoric is okay coming from you, and not from others.  I understand, and I'm sure so do others trying to enjoy the Carlos event.  Clearly your opinions aren't valued.  Don't bother responding - I don't need you to.  You've already demonstrated your lack of sportmanship aside from illiteracy in this thread while bagging on others, and your arrogance as well.

No, actually I have no desire to get anywhere with you - you're stubborn and eclipsed by your own perceived rightgeousness.  I know - you're right and everyone else is always wrong.  Doesn't that suck?

Go back and hide in your hole and let the rest of us enjoy what will come of Carlos' great upcoming event.

To all others, if you felt like I fed the troll, my regrets  - I won't feed the troll anymore!

Glbtrotter:  PREACH IT!!   There are those of us who would love to buy you a beer (or two), if we ever have the good luck to meet you.

I didn’t know it was a game of one-upmanship, trot. As you’ll turn a mature 41 in a few weeks I’m surprised at your posts’ innate venality, more so since not long ago you offered to moderate this forum for us. Still, culled of verbosity and personal insult not much remains. You don’t like my writing and spelling. Well, please get over it, or a life, as they say. You’re in favor of Carlos’s event and the participants (including hero Wallace) are fine people. You’re welcome. But countless unsung folk in this activity freely give of their time week after week as well. The SV ‘profiteers’ and ego-trips. The AKC (seen their latest result?) and other national bodies also show good profits. These are reserved on behalf of members though and applied to further GSD activity. I meant to add how professional the SV is (as true) but also just happened again to recall Raiser’s lengthy amateurish, if not destructive conduct. Not surprised he’s in this event! Under the SV many feel schutzhund is heading in the wrong direction. No doubt, but the SV need steer its way through numerous factional interests, not to mention allowing for public opinion, lawmakers and strident anti dog-sport groups. Their main concerns lie with the future of GSD activity as a whole (and own dominance). I’m struck once more by your stridency, trot. Time flies; was it only last November that you said you were a GSD newbie? Also not surprised last Christmas, “Santa brought a new Remington 700 5R with a special Mike Rock barrel, a Horus Vision System scope, and a Benelli Cordoba shotgun...” (there must be a real need where you are!) It kind of fits with the way some fervent schutzhund supporters remind of those who after hearing about its supposed aggression, go out and buy Rottweilers! Before I finish a gentle, well-meant word of advice to a self-proclaimed former marine whose self-alleged history sounds like an exotic Hollywood movie script and enjoys slinging off at others. There’s a horrifying amount of information out there for those who trouble and know how to look - enough said? (And easy with that online gambling – you’re beat before you even start!)

Speaknow,

Clearly you didn't pay attention.

You think you impress by clicking on a few buttons and finding a few tidbits about me?  I feel rather honored you invested that much time!   You read all my posts?  You're not worth the time...Clearly there must not be much going on in your life to not only enjoy the cowardly anonimity you demonstrate, all while flinging grenades at those less equipped while hiding the hand and declaring yourself a victim.   I feel honored you spent so much time on me and saddened you did it taking away from Carlos' thread.

I'm looking forward to the Carlos 2008 Master's tournament, as I know many are!

As those who know me personally on the board, I'm fairly comfortable with myself for all to see, even pompous arrogant dimwits such as you who seem to think your age brings about a larger wisdom.  It is your kind that discourages many a newbies from joining the sport.  It's people like you who hide behind the anonimity of the  internet, one of the few places where you can fester.  Fortunately there are others who we can learn from while avoiding trolls like you, and events like Carlos' inspire by seeing the very best, even if they don't agree with less popular views such as yours and your misguided politics.

Evolve or die, old fart.  And my offer to moderate stands - terms of service you clearly violated before anyone else.

Nope, unlucky for you, quite a few know me in person, by name, and yes, very much as a self proclaimed newbie...military service and all.  And while there isn't much need in Southern California, Downtown Chicago, or even Downtown Boston for some of the hobbies I enjoy, being in America, I rather enjoy the freedom to practice them rather than espouse your clearly communist views and the jealousy that comes with it.

Wallace isn't a hero - putting words in other's mouth is a puerile practice on your part.  He's a fallible man who has commitment and who has been on the podium, regardless of faults which he admits.  Do you admit yours?  You would be lucky enough to learn or contribute to the sport 1000th of what Helmut contributes while you cowardly sit on the sidelines behind the warm glow of your monitor...about the only warmth you get. Ivan?  God bless him. For all his curious personality, he's a solid individual with tremendous warmth, brilliance, experience and a much in check ego...and God knows he has far more excuse than you for it.

When you can evoke the kind of emotion that the people invited in this event can, rather than being a true hypocritical armchair quarterback and demonstrated anonymous troll, I'll apologize.  Until then, you're nothing more than a proletazing, self aggrandizing windbag feeling nostalgia over greatness you never really had.

You and your lunatic schutzhund 'sport' fringe certainly add a whole new dimension to GSD activity, if not this forum.

by glbtrottr on 14 February 2008 - 15:02

Finally!  Thank you! It took 231 replies for us all to find out that your issue is with the "Lunatic Schutzhund Sport Fringe" (i.e. "Working Dogs") as opposed to Show Dogs.

We would have respected you a lot more if you had done so without starting personal attacks to everyone - the promoter  / organizer, the participants, the attendees.

Phew!  Now we can dismiss this as another deviation into the land of "show versus working" arguments.  Oh, and before you go too far, there's the whole "hard dog/real dog versus point dog" argument.  I will warn you that the "lunatics" in that fringe are far more fanatical about their dogs, and taught me that I'm much more about owning a real sport dog than a true attack dog.

(You just put me in a great mood!  Not to date myself, but "Lunatic Fringe" was a great tune!  Images of VisionQuest, the movie, with Matthew Modine as a young coming of age wrestler and Linda Fiorentino as his love interest.  Thank you!)

That's precisely why Ivan is hoping to demonstrate what he can do with Apache, a complete show dog by all accounts, in a working dog event.  While I don't like the look of roachbacks, I respect efforts such as Ivan's to reconcile the conversation, specially in a public demonstrated event.

(humming Lunatic Fringe as I go off into my Lunatic Schutzhund Sport Fringe world to work some puppies...)
