With all due respect I highly doubt it is mange. It is prime pollen season. Get to a good vet for a proper diagnosis. They see this type of thing everyday and are able to make a diagnosis through blood tests and cultures. My bet its allergies.

Abby K,

Did you ever find out what were causing the bald spots?  Was it hot spots after all?

Reason I ask is that I believe my 9 month old has a hot spot on the side of her face.

I noticed less than a week ago that the side of her face/neck area seemed clumped like the fur was wet.  I didn't really think much of it until the next day when it still seemed that way,  She likes to play with the hose so, I sort of hosed off the side of the face, thinking she rolled in something.  The next day, it still looked that way and it had a funny, not too pleasant smell.  I immediately started looking thru the fur deeper and found that the skin underneath was red and somewhat inflamed.  I washed down the area, clipped the fur and then noticed she has what appears to be a good sized hot spot.  I shaved the fur in the area and a little around it and cleaned it good and applied some medicated bacterial spray that I had.  I then went to the store and bought something for hot spots.  Withing two days, it seems to have dried up completely with just some scabbing left and the hair looks like it's already trying to grow back.

My question is, I really went thru her coat after this and noticed that on her shoulder area behind where I would normally apply her Frontline, her coat is very thin and it looks as though she has just a very small amount of dandruff.  She's been shedding pretty bad within this past week; more than what seems normal.  She's not bald anywhere (other than where I shaved her!) but, it concerns me nonetheless and I'm scheduling a visit to the vet in the morning.  Just wondering what you found out, if anything.

Thanks in advance,

Dawn

Have a female myself that had the exact same problems, Abby K.

Took her to the vet for allergy test (wasn't thousands!), and bingo, was an allergy. Switched foods to a holistic containing none of what she was allergic to, and have had NO PROBLEMS with her since.  :)

I would take her in to the vet to make sure, however. They'll probably prescribe a spray antibiotic and give you antihistamines (benadryl) and suggest a topical hydrocortisone cream or spray to keep her from scratching at the spots until they do figure out what exactly is going on.

Doesn't sound like the mange to me either....completely in agreement with Ryan (VINCE!).

Good luck, and let us know the outcome??
