I agree keep the weight down and you will have a healthier dog.

I feed Canidae dry dog food, but if I want to add a little weight to a thin dog I will feed them Frozen Bill-Jack. I had a male that was to thin and I put him on the frozen Bill-Jack and he gained a few pounds.

I just started training my GSD in a Schutzhund club and I got bitten. Not by the dog, but by the other members. Your dog is fat...He was orginally a protection dog and highly stressed out, weighing 72 Lbs. Average height. He now is 96 Lbs. I know not ideal for working but ok "petwise". I wanted just to give him some "downtime" mentally and physically. Which I believe has made him much more stable. I need to get him to his 2-3 ribs showing. He was at the point of all of his ribs showing. The point is he gained 20+ Lbs in NO time...getting off? Well that is a whole different story! Happy & Energetic? Leave him be is my opinion. Hans

Anybody have an opinion on Nutro Max? I fed that to my last dog and one winter she put on eight pounds eating it. I quit feeding her that when I found out she was allergic to the lamb in it but Nenz isn't allergic so I am thinking about switching.

ilove, without seeing the dog it is impossible to say what he should weigh, but it is safe to say that with bad hips his weight should be down. How bad are his hips? How old is he? If I read your post correctly he has H.D. I would get rid of Iams. Generally speaking it has been my experience that quality food does not take as much quantity to feed them and they will have less stool and more firm stools. It's a win win situation with quality food. If you can look back at some of the dog food threads that have come up in the past and you can get a good idea of whats good.

His hips are bad enough that people always comment that he looks like his hips hurt him but not bad enough to stop him from tearing around some on walks. I feed Iams because the amount the label says to feed is the smallest amount necessary to maintain body weight. He loses weight on anything else.

Sounds fine to me. Better a little to thin than overweight. As long as his muscle is good, he has plenty of energy, you can see his last couple ribs when he extended in a trot, and his hips and spine do not protrude, he's probably fine.
