Looking for training material. SCHH1 - Page 2

I go to my training group every 2nd week, when things are 'normal'. I have some experience and a young dog not ready for serious protection training yet, so all of it I can do at home by myself. But when my dog is more mature she will need to be worked with a helper. For now, it's training @ home, or close to it for tracking.

Just to clarify, there should be only one handler training the dog. Otherwise much too confusing for the dog. There are alot of good websites also, as well as youtube videos.

I prepared my last female for lifetime KKL (1 trip around the ring and "bite") and never left my back yard till the trial.

preparation was put her on a sit, walk off the distance, then had her on command "savagely" attack my mad dog sleeve. looked really impressive, but that sleeve today still looks brand new.

she not only passed life, she was Regional Siegerin and the only B/R dog at her trial.

I once heard a very high level trainer say (and he was on the U.S. team 2 or 3 years) that it is all 90% obedience.

If your dog has never been involved in bitework, I would wait until you find a good helper. You can begin teaching things like the blind search (if they still do that), hold and bark, and out exercises on your own, but I would save the bitework for the helper so your dog gets off to a good start.

Some club members get together several days a week in addition to the regular club dates. You may get lucky and find a group getting together that is closer to your location.

BTW  Always take the time to thank your helper for his work.  And it never hurts to buy them lunch or supper every once in a while during training days.  Sure feels good when they know they're appreciated.;)

Right now we've been focused on the BH training. We have found patterns online. We have also seen videos for purchase from Kraftwerk K9 and other trainers. We were looking for recommendations from folks who are experienced with this type of training. We are still working on basics. From what we have read, our dog has to be 15 months old to test. That will be our first goal. She is still young, focused with high drive and eager to please. We would like to see how well she can do.

Michigan is now shut down until the end of May. In this area, most folks just come up for hunting cabins or summer homes. That is now illegal until June 1st in the State of Michigan. So, we are stuck with home training for a little while. Then we will try to meet up with a group for more experience, advice and critiques.

And I agree, people sharing knowledge and experience should not be taken lightly. Always glad to show appreciation for someone else's time.

Bill, as you'll see on the training websites (you often get free videos to view, https://www.schutzhundkevin.com/ is another good one), the exercises are broken down into smaller parts so the dog has a lot of success and high rate of reward as the exercise is built. So don't focus on the routine. You should learn and practice it by yourself. Walk the pattern as if you have your dog so it becomes very familiar to you. We are all doing our training at home. There is plenty to do, and you're actually far ahead to have the dog be confident and understand the exercises at home so she'll be ready to move on to new places when the restrictions are lifted.
