Many many moons ago, a friend of mine bred a solid blk male to a solid white dam...All the pups were solid black, with only one or two having VERY little white on chest....There were no black and tans...I don't know the background color of either parent, but I did figure that the white parent had a black gene and the black parent did not have any white in the background.....

the white is a masking gene - so genetically the white dog could carry black, black/tan or sable - so as a poster already said - you would have to know the color genetics of the white dog to know what he would produce when bred to a black dog.  the black dog can only give black, but would  only produce black puppies if the white dog carried black, or was genetically black itself.
