But the topic of this post is: what breed. Is the puppy in the original post a Mali or a gsd, as some posting believe? . Koots, they are not exclusive to Canada...and every tervuren I've ever seen was sable, not b/ t. And the lakenois I've ever seen had a wirery coat. . AKC also recognises all four " varieties" of the Dutch herder as distinct breeds.

Ok Joanro loud and clear...
When the pup will develop makes some clear in structure or test some DNA ... IMO
Hope the pup doing well

Joan - I used black/tan to describe the Tervuren colouring as a simplistic explanation. Now whether it is black/tan or sable, the colour that people see is tan with black mask and points/mane, or whatever you want to call it. The Laekenois is indeed a course-textured coat, AND it is on the curly side rather than straight. But, since everyone is America already knows this, it shouldn't need to be stated, EXCEPT when you have some people claiming a long-haired Belgian with tan/black colouring is a Malinois and not a Tervuren.
Edit to add: Not sure what the problem is Joan, but you seem to be a little vitriolic towards me in your posts, so I am just going to wish you a Merry Christmas and best wishes for a good 2019.

Didn't intend to come across as " vitriolic" , koots. No problem with you, I'm just lousy at composing posts.
Btw, I said ' every Dog Person in America knows' what a turv is.
I have a tan point sable gsd that if one doesn't have knowledge about different colors, would thing she is black and tan. The difference between a curly coat and wire coat, beside hair texture, is the whiskers on the wire coat....like the whiskers on the lakenois. Not a big deal meant to inform you, koots, because I know you know.

To the OP - since you posted these first pics, would you please post more as she grows so that we can see what she looks like as she develops. That will give us more idea about her dominant genetic heritage, but more importantly is that she looks adorable so more pics would be a bonus!

Yeah, weird - because it's not true. Plenty of long haired Malinois in European working lines; that's where my kids got their long hair. Stateside, Michael Ellis has at least one long-haired Mal in his line too. You're much less likely to see them in the show ring as well, because of the rumor that it's a disqualifying fault. Tell that to the judges of both my "working-line" (such a silly thing to say about Malinois), long-haired, GCh. Malinois.
I have never seen long haired Malinois in dog shows other than my own and neither have many of the judges we've shown under. One judge gave us a high group placing, then asked me what kind of dog she was, hahaha.
Bottom line is that the coat length doesn't matter one bit at all.
