JohnHV: Everything the folks have said so far is exactly what is needed to help improve the health of your new guy...
You may not have sand and sand is what should be used but you need to find things that are available to you...Such as...instead of sand you can use anything that might help improve the strength in his rear end without stressing it too much...Swimming might actually be the best...But you can also walk him in stones...which will also help strengthen him...walking him in just grass doesn't give him what he needs...
I will tell you one thing I don't think anyone has talked about yet...And that is DIET...He needs to be on a good "Grain Free" food but RAW would also do him wonders...He needs the bone...such as RAW Chicken (with bones)...If you're new to RAW Feeding then you might want to inquire about it...

I appreciate and respect anyone who not only saves an animal but one who takes good care of them...and gives them what they need...

John, that's marvelous about the shelter's program to prevent early spay/neuter! Thank heavens some people are finally waking up and realizing the harm it can do! Best news I've heard in quite a while!

Ditto to what everyone has said. Your pup is over-angulated and cow-hocked, and regular low-impact exercise will help strengthen the rear. And yes, it's very common, and not a huge cause for concern. If people didn't breed for such extreme angulation, t wouldn't be so common!

Wow, excellent,John, that he's intact!! His chances of developing normally just skyrocketed :) If he were my dog, I'd consider a vasectomy. I doubt the shelter cares how he's sterilized and that will give him the best chance to mature as nature intended.

PM me your email address and I will send the list of foods.I would not feed Blue Buffalo- very overpriced and they recently had a lawsuit (lost, I believe) for flat-out lying about the ingredients. NOT a good quality food, but price and commercials lead you to believe it is. You can do better for the same money, if not less. It is imperative that he be fed a proper food for large breed puppies, or that you seek help in formulating a raw diet.
