Herbals are only good in assisting a healthy body stay healthy. Something invasive as arthritis herbal remedies are useless and a waste of money IMO.

I was thinking maybe tramadol, just a light dose. Not enough to make her groggy. It's not serious yet. I just want to give her the best options for a pain free last few years. I hope and pray it does not progress quickly. I'll be lost without her. Syd is my very first German Shepherd, the dog who started it all and made me fall deep for this breed.

Melba .... all dogs are Buddhist. Buddhist include most people and animals without cable TV and internet. Cable TV and internet teach us that we will live forever and never get old. Buddhist follow four truths and the first truth is that life is suffering i.e., life includes pain, getting old, disease, and ultimately death. I am younger than your dog Syd ( in dog years ) and I have most of her physical ailments you described already. I have no problem once I warm up as you observed and I need more frequent rest but as yet I have no thoughts of ending my suffering. Which brings us back to my first point .. all dogs are Buddhist and they can handle life's inconvenient truths.

As an unrelated topic Irma is very fat and very happy with being an inside the house dog ... she chases her ball whenever I throw it and she never tires of asking me to throw it.

Hi All: which Vertex formula do you like best; all are similar depending on what you want to accomplish. But for sore joints and etc, even arthritis which works best for your dogs? Thx Nan

Melba, I know what you mean. Roxy was my first that started it all for me and passed away at 16 years of age (last year). At 12 she showed discomfort but still hunted chipmunks from the riverbanks for a year or two before really slowing down. Her last year was pretty rough though :-(

I haven't seen any grogginess in all 3 dogs on tramadol 50 mg two times a day.

Thank you Dawulf. went thru all formulas and I thought they used to have a senior formula but the discontinued that si Vertex Canine Essentials I will look up.

PS: the Tramadol can make them sleepy and sleep too much but if you find that out just cut dosage down, however there are side affects, but I have not used it daily LONG TERM. Just like after surgery like yesterday. Had to have a tumor removed from my 10 year olds private area so he is getting the surgical dosage of 50 mg. 2 X's per day.  Although I used it a couple of weeks ago as he hurt himself 50 mg with dinner at 6:OO PM by 11 o'clock that night it was better already and gave him a bit more the next day and the following night and gone by 3rd day, did not give him any more.  Some do have some sensitivities to it though.  As long as you give lowest dose you possibly can then you have something to go up to if you have to increase later on.  Work miracles for my guy.Nan

Capri jumped off a table, over a railing, and got one leg caught in the railing and hung there for a second before freeing herself. She did it when she was about 6 years old. Since then, I have noticed less range of motion in that leg as she's aged. I have given her many many things (not drugs since this is not a huge problem) and you know what made a noticeable difference? MSM. Cheap old MSM from Animed, bought in the horse section of whatever farm supply store. I have a senior gelding who gets it for environmental allergies (on MSM he never needs steroids to breathe, where previously he was on dexamethasone or he literally could not breathe) and I decided what the heck- I'll give it to Pri since it's good for connective tissue. I noticed within about 3 weeks that she was jumping up onto the porch and not using the stairs, which was new. She always jumped off, but jumping up that leg would just barely make it. On the MSM, she was jumping freely and that leg was not landing any differently than the other one.

Can't beat it for safety and price- I pay about $15 for 2.5lbs.

Thank you Jenni for sharing that, I was on the fence about MSM as well as glausamine/chondroitain (f the spelling) and I am thinking possibly the horse products are more pure than the dog products as I have not had any luck with anything in the dog formulas. Go figure.

Will move on. Thanks Nan
