Grim was a great dog, but can go either way, good or bad depending to what females he was mated with. Line breeding on Grim is not always a good idea!

When breeding german shepherds there will always be a few with bad hips and the more a dog is breed no matter what the rating some will surface. The unfortunate thing is always the sire is blamed whether it is hips or anything else produced out of a litter. The famous dogs get breed more than the average dog is why they by law of averages will have produced some bad hips by the sheer volume. With Grim who I estimate had over seventy plus breedings he would have had to produce some bad hips but I do not think they were more than any other famous dog at that time who was breed frequently. Funky man is correct for sure.

When I replied to the question, I didn't fully answer. Yes, all dogs that are bred a hundred times will have a dog or few with bad hips. Yes it does matter the bitch you breed, but these hip ratings are for the breeders to take into account. If I am trying to better the breed, then I am going to find a dog with similar drives, produces well, and has a better hip rating in his/her pedigree. Sooner or later a certain gene will be passed. For example, look at Xant z jirkova dvora. His structure looks nothing like his parents. "How did he get the roach-back?" Bottom half...third generation....

This is all that needs to be said about Grim.
When Jiri Novotny(sp) (ex head of the z PS, border patrol, breeding program) was asked what dog of all czech dogs he wants to see in a pedigree he answered with one dog "Grim". To me that one statement says it all.
I have a Grim great grand daughter, Xero grand daughter, and she has drive out the you know what. I would be more than willing to take a dog with Grim any where in the pedigree.

I have a young bitch linebred 3-3 on Grim and her training is progressing very well.
She is a "lot" of dog with a suspicious, sharp temperament. He prey drive on the field was not there until she turned about 18 months.
Good chance her hips will go excellent, I have had her A stamped. Ears are fine, but from from I have been told one of Grim's did fall in later life.
I train with her father who is a Dar son. From my limited experience with Grim I like it and like it a lot.
