Need opinions on Elbow X-rays - Page 2

The OP has scared himself about the possible osteophyte
Jen; none of us who had posted so far had noted it. I for
instance have not commented further since he drew our
attention to it, as it is outwith my expertise. Elbow Xrays,
as previously noted on PDB, are not something many of us
are very practised at interpreting. I'd like to hear what the
OP's radiologist says - when he can get hold of her - before
trying to second guess her, or the osteo experts; she did not
make reference to it in her Report.

No, I definitely see it; I'm just not sure that it's as bad as it appears and that it's not the angle contributing to the appearance of an osteophyte. That's why I noted the "rules" about them last I checked (size permitted and still earning a "normal" grade).

I'm fairly decent at elbows. Not a radiologist, of course, but a whole lot better than some of the ppl on FB scaring people with their willy-nilly guesses.

I think that is why OP is re doing the x-rays; when were these taken?

Also on a positive note, my boy was very lame and limping and painful at that age of 13 months; he had 3 bad bouts of pano, I just kept him moving at whatever pace he chose, no running or working and rest afterwards of while serious limping was going on. It cleared up about 2 years old and has never come back, knock on wood and he is almost 3 years old (June 4). Soooo I do understand your concerns, hate to see these guys lame but it does happen. I was told a lower protein sometimes helps but really it just takes time and resting them and it usually does not come at a worse time than any month prior to 2/3 years old, usually right in the middle of serious training time. Again, I am not concerned with pano.

I just noted in the OP that he had pano, which can cause some spotting on the xray, which may (hopfully) be why that area on the elbow appears to look like an osteophyte in the xray, and why it was not mentioned in the radiology report.

Or as Jenni78 mentioned, it could be due to the angle.

This is one of the reasons why I am getting the xrays redone now, at 21 months old. The xrays were taken back in august when the dog was 13 months old.

He has not had a bout of pano (or elbow pain) since the xrays were taken.

I will be sure to post the updated xrays on tuesday. Hopefully I can get in contact with the radiologist before then....still no word from her. It is the weekend though.

Why redo them again now at 21 months  Just wait until 24 months then send them in or you will need to redo them again at 24 months to get a cert.

You say he is having no problems then why the rush

Do you have the first set? Send those in for a prelim reading get OFA's opinion to ease your worries.

Still would ask for more information from the radiologist.

I didn't mean pano was causing there to be the appearance of an osteophyte; I meant the angle of the elbow might be contributing to how obvious it looked and that if it is indeed an osteophyte significant enough for OFA to downgrade you, I meant that muscle atrophy and limping from pano COULD be responsible, only from the standpoint that when the support system of joints is compromised (atrophy), they are more prone to injury. Hope that is slightly clearer...
