Hi Hodie, Nice to see you here. Hope you have a wonderful day! Birdy...

I stopped feeding Royal Canin some time ago, the cost of the food appearred excessive and it irritated my bitches stomach, despite trying different varieties over a period of time. I was not getting the results I required on this food. I now feed a quality 'working feed' and the dogs look great. I have wondered for some time if premium foods are a con, they appeal to the owners not the dogs.

I do feed RC so will be watching this very closely. Rikka loves it and she seems to be thriving on it so I am hesitant to change. I also suppliment with K-9 Cravings raw diet. I do tink that kidney tests will be in order on the next vet check just to be sure.

My Grandma's dog's, Gsd's, got table scraps in the am and for Dinner. She made enough for them. She was Polish cooked alot of sourkraut and cabbage, sausage, pancakes, eggs, onions in everything, stews, and raisins were thrown in some of the cooked meals, alot of tomato based meals. I do not think her dogs ever went to the vet, lived long and never had skin problems. I remember them only fighting over the potato pancakes.

I hear ya! My dads 3 hunting dogs used to be fed GRAVY TRAIN with a loaf of bread from the day old store mixed in...garlic SALT for 'flea & prevention'. They all lived to 13-14 yrs old, NEVER went to the vet, had shots or even wormings. They were some of the healthiest dogs you could hope for and never once did I see a flea! Times are different now, that's for sure.

I used to feed RC and for a while...really liked it..BUT...then my dogs started having trouble with it. I still use "Baby Dog" and have had great luck with it. We have changed to National Dog Food and have been using it for 8 months now. The dogs have never looked better! They eat less and have wonderful coats and muscle tone. I've tried all the major brands over the years including the Holistics and the raw diet. By far...if done correctly...the raw/natural diet, I feel is the way to go. As for now....I really like the food we feed, and ALL the dogs are doing great! I would recommend it. Robin

I feed RAW mostly but noticed when my dogs are offered meat that is cooked they like it better. Especially Bar-B-Qued!! But then there is no bone in there for the calcium... I can't find bonemeal (human grade) anymore. Anyone know how to deal with this aspect of "home cooking" vs RAW?

by Blitzen on 22 March 2007 - 21:03

The local health food store here carries human grade bone meal. I think you can also buy it on the net. It is made by Schiff and called "Bone-All Powder", natural sterilized edible beef bone with red bone marrow. I guess the bottom line is to feed whatever works best for your dogs and the same food may or may not be right for every dog. I'm leaning more toward the opinion that designer foods are not need by most dogs, but they might be necessary for working dogs that burn a lot of calories such as those that ran the Iditarod. The average dog might not need all of that. I also think about how many dogs are stool eaters and/or eat all other sorts of bizarre things and then I fail to get all excited about thinking I may find a broom straw in a bag of dog food LOL. Blitz is very fond of dryer sheets, eats them every time he can.

Trailrider, I have found the same about grilled meat. Young dogs will eat anything with gusto, but my adult female will refuse ground raw in favor of raw whole chicken, pork chops or steak. Blitzen, that sounds like a dog grade breath mint.Best Wishes, Jonah

Blitzen when I first dabbled in feeding home cooked food years ago I got bone meal at a health food store. Then I got lazy and went back to DF. I then decided to try again the home cooking and they no longer had it! That is why I am grinding those chickens!!! Some time has gone by, maybe I should try again or google it. My new puppy steals dryer sheets every chance she gets! That is weird, I thought it was just cuz she was a pup!
