Kevin, there are still more decent breeders than there are what a friend of mine used to call 'shitbirds', and it DOES suck that someone would take advantage of your novice status in this particular subject. I appreciate your service, and I'm sure that many others on this board share all of the aforementioned sentiments regarding the situation you're dealing with.

That said, what you probably don't know, since you're only recently here, is that your experience is still GINORMOUSLY better than a lot of other novice buyers go through, which is why there's some degree of, 'well, it would have been a good idea to do some more research before you handed over your money to someone hundreds of miles away who you've never met' being expressed. There are folks who received absolutely NOTHING for their money--no dog, no crate, nothing at all. There are folks who received a dog, but it was so sickly it had to be euthanized shortly after they received the poor thing. Everything that someone could pull on another person has been, and will continue to be, pulled by breeders--and to be honest, it's even happened to experienced people as well.

Part of what makes the cynics in us wonder why more research wasn't done before making a purchase has to do with the fact that these things nearly always involve purchases across long distances, where the dog is bought basically sight unseen--seeing a photo or video is no different than sight unseen, since both can be easily faked--and the buyer has never met the seller or the seller's dogs, and the buyer wasn't referred to the seller by a trusted friend of the buyer...instead, the seller was selected by the buyer from web searching or advertising in some fashion. You, however, have an advantage that is invaluable and virtually unheard of in these cases: you're married to an attorney, and thus have the ability to make use of the full force of law if things come to that. For the majority, hiring an attorney--if they can find one who will take the case--would just be increasing the cost of the insult already done to them.

So it's not that no one cares that a disabled veteran was misled [at best] or screwed over--it's simply that we've all empathized with people over far worse, and if those people had spent just a little more time they could probably have found what they were looking for locally and been able to see the person they were dealing with face to face, or had found sites like this where they could have found out what questions to ask, what authentications to insist upon, and what other people's experiences have been with one seller or another.

I'm glad that you love the puppy you received, even though he sure doesn't look like the same one from the first photo you chose from, and that he's healthy. He's as likely to develop into whatever role you choose for him just as well as any other pup in the litter, it's just a matter of working with a trainer who can help you bring out his full potential. And hopefully you WILL get his registration paperwork in short order, and the breeder will get you a copy of the litter's pedigree out to you as well...and you'll all enjoy a long and happy life together, you and your wife and your new pup. It could have turned out a WHOLE lot worse, sadly.

Even if researched till the cows come home you probably would be in the same boat. The type of research that most recommend still has major holes. Unless you know the breeder or are referred from someone stuff like this happens. Breeders whom are prone to scumbaggery will most likely dish it out to the unknown buyer. My guess is and only a guess........... Someone whom was picking up a pup probably was allowed to take the pup you reserved home and so they where switched. If it was related to the job breeder picks up the phone and say I cant send this dog its probable its not going to be right for the job. Clients bummed, but not disillusioned. This wont happen if breeders dont allow pick a pup from a pic.

In order to have a high bullseye in targeting pups for jobs, pups need to be continually held back by the breeder especially when you are mixing the lines and especially when its the first breeding between the pairs. If a breeder has all the puppies sold from the litter months in advance and they able to leave at 7/8 weeks chances lean decidedly towards a puppy breeder, not the best for an individual buyer with specific goals. Many traits are somewhat present from out of the sac to 6 weeks others are not there yet or in flower. Its not that it cant go well it more that its not going to go as well as it could at best case scenario and at worst its bad real bad. This combined with pick a color collar plop money and its yours is red light material for me, and common practice and not in the recommendation info pack thats handed out...... so of no help in this case.

Kwoolum, in case your last post was directed at me - I neither know the breeder nor you.
Welcome in the world of internet and dog salesmanship!

In this case it doesn´t matter if you are a disabled vet or if you are my overweight neighbour, it´s about a sales contract, not more, not less.

I tried to point out that it will be more than difficult for you to proof that you didn´t get the pup you paid for, I doubt you will be able to do so.

You bought by "picture", I simply tried to tell you that ears change during that age, that colors of sables change a lot during that age, and that the litter as a whole looks very similar.

Possibilities:

1. You got what you paid for
2. The breeder simply exchanged the pictures ( I guess they took a lot of pictures )
3. The breeder sent you the pup fitting your needs
4. The breeder sent you a pup of the gender you paid for out of the litter you paid for

Hexe made good points - you got a puppy, you seem to have gotten a puppy out of the litter you paid for, you got the correct gender, the puppy seems to be healthy ( future will show ), the puppy seems to show good drives ( everything else is up to you ). We have seen and heard about far worse...

You are right, in case you paid for a special pup, you should get this pup - but I doubt you will be able to proof it.
Sorry

In case you paid for AKC registration, I´d insist on this part of the contract ( easy to proof, easy to sue for ), everything else - more than difficult.

You got a pup you like, go on from this point.

Honestly, kind regards

No Susie it does matter. It matters to ME. You have no Idea how or why I bought my pup unless you know me. There were several phone calls, e-mails and text's back and forth and it was crystal clear. I never ever talked to you before. If you think my comment was directed to you. That is on you, maybe I hit a nerve, maybe your are the kind of person everyone is talking about. If she did not want to send me the pup I wanted she should of offered to return my money. Simple as that.

I have said nothing bad about anyone not even you Susie. I talking about me getting ripped off. It sucks getting ripped off, I don't care who you are. I bought a pup from a scam artist. If any of this is o.k. with you then maybe you need to learn how to be a better human.

I will be praying for you to understand things instead of assume.

And Susie, maybe the overweight neighbor has a medical condition. See it does Matter

Nobody feels good about what happened to you, people seem to be answering your questions soundly.

You mentioned prayer, if you are a believer then you might see this whole event in a different perspective, you may havecTHIS pup for a reason.

I hope the breeder gets bought to justice and you work toward that end but I also hope you don't obsess over it.
