What area of Southern Ca do you live.  For every Show line you see there is also a working line.  Maybe I can point you to some nice working lines males and also someone to help you train.

A trainer shows you what and how but you do the work so learn too.

That would be Awesome! and I'd really appreciate that I live in Los Angeles county but I willing to travel a distance if that's what it takes, yes I'd really take advantage of trying to learn from them!!!

There are a few nice clubs and nice people in southern California that have working line dogs. I live in Northern California. I started out with my first German Shepherd when I wa 18 years old.. I got with a good trainer and have learned a lot from the people I have trained with and also for the current club I am with. So before you think about breeding ( it is a lot of work, heartache, blood sweat and tears) I would do as Western Riders says and get with a club and work and title your female.. That way you will learn more about your female and at that point you will have her health tested. You will also get to talk to people who have been doing this for a long time and get their opinion on your female and at that point see if she is breeding material and IF so who they feel she would cross the best with.

Thank you very much ive never been on my phone so much my family and girlfriend are getting annoyed of it but I'm so interested in it I can't stop there's so much more to it then I thought but I like it and really how do I join a club I'd really love to know more info on how I do that ? That sounds like the key to it for me to learn. It's 1 in the morning and I've been looking and reading about German shepherds since before school which was at 6 in the morning yesterday which has to be crazy because I do this everyday lol

Think I can give some good sources for information. To get basic obedience on your dog contact Dave Guild @ unleash thefun.com. Also use k9adventures. Known him for say 25 years. He worked as a vet tech under Dr Weitkamp top vet especially for GSDs. Great trainer without needing to be on tv. Have sent owners of aggressive dogs to humans or other dogs to Dave and he showed humans how to correctly handle their dogs and saved dog lives as the owners had to find me to thank and these people did not know my name.

Go to Dave FIRST!! Then since you seem to be interested in protection type you might want to get involved in schutzhund. There is a United Schutzhund Club of America club near you. You need to contact the head @ 818-519-2414. They meet in a city east of you. Talk to Nelli to go and see what they do. I have met some of the members and they are super duper nice and helpful. The national is in Mo. There is a club in Long Beach, but do check out Nelli's group.

Do not be surprised if they tell you that your girl is not a candidate for this work. Ask Dave as he will tell you the real truth. He works or did with police depts k9 staff. One officer once told me depts compete to get Dave to work with their staff.

I have a GSD bitch who is really smart and to me a perfect size and sweet as can be. Dave saw that she is clear headed and has an on off switch. Could train her in protection in no time, but I do not want that for her. She knows at least 30 voice and hand signals. She has all kinds of titles in various areas. She is totally trust worthy and is perfect with children even not being brought up around them. But she will never be bred as there are my own reasons.

Having a litter can be dangerous for her. Dr Weitkamp was called in to save the life of my first GSD as the final pup was dead and had been for a while and the local vet was a fool. And to whom are you going to sell the pups to?? Potential owners are going to take good care of your pups??? It costs a lot to care for your pg bitch, if you do things correctly. How are her hips?? She can produce her bad hips and she cannot jump.

Why is it that as soon as they buy a bitch, people just have to breed it without any knowledge of dogs, the pedigree, the risks, training?? Yes, this list has tried to be kind and tell you what I said above. But I have just been sarcastic to try to kindly say what these kind people are trying to so kindly say.

So, get your dog x-rayed by a knowledgeable vet as Dr Jaberra [sp?] or Dr Bill Grant of Garden Grove who x-Rays for many police depts. He has told some to return dogs because dog with bad hips could not work.

Before you get involved in breedings do as you have done here get educated!! Go to see Dave then go and watch the schutzhund work or at least AKC obedience.

The very best wishes!!!! This first dog will or can teach you so much. Oh, go talk to Dr Bill of Garden Grove!!! He is another one who can teach you so very very much and hopefully save you so many time and tears!!

Seems like to me you have everything bass ackwards.

1. This is a well bred bitch- your first place for education and support is the breeder. Did you buy the bitch as a pet, a sport dog or for breeding and were you honest with the breeder about your intentions? Her breeder is well connected within the sport and I can not believe she would not help you find a training club IF you but asked. How did you come to choose this breeder since she is out of your area – if your research was good enough to find a good breeder surely you should know about the USCA and it’s local clubs? There is a disconnect in what you are telling us.

2. You need to take this bitch and train , title her and get her health clearances BEFORE even thinking about breeding. The process of training and titling will tell you a. if she is even worthy of being bred and b. what areas she needs improvement in so that c. you can find a stud dog that compensates in those areas – and not I’m not talking color I’m talking structure, temperament, character and drives ( pack, hunt, obedience, defensive, prey etc). While I am not a fan of DDR dogs to begin with the worst reason you could breed to a DDR dog is for the black sable – that coloring is available in most working lines and color inheritance in GSDs is not as simple as you seem to think. Simply search the archives of this db to get a flavor why a simple color breeding is not a good idea and certainly not guaranteed to give you the color you desire especially if you lack understanding of the inheritance of color and pattern in GSDs.

3. Breeding and raising pups is time intensive and can be very expensive – if she runs into problems whelping – it’s usually at night when your only resource is an emergency vet hospital who charge the heck out of you. A routine $800-1000 c section now all of a sudden is going to cost you $2500 – 5k at least in the Central Valley. As a student do you have those resources both time and money?

4. You seem to be saying you want to be a k9 officer and want to breed your own dog. Reality check most departments that use dogs have very well defined processes surrounding the k9 unit. They are not easy to get into – it can take years - and the vast majority do not want you to bring your own dog. The department supplies and owns and controls the disposition of the dogs. They have well defined vendor relationships for the buying and training of their police dogs AND they may choose to use a different breed such as the Malinois. Once again you have the cart b4 the horse. Go get your education and POST training. Look for departments that have good k9 programs and put those departments on your short list but know it may take time to get on the unit. Consider what to many would be non traditional LEO positions – for example Customs uses dogs for a number of purposes BUT their dogs are kenneled 24/7 except when on duty – they do not live with their handlers. An increasing number of states partner dogs with their game wardens ( has a different name in CA) not only for people searches and protection of their officers but for trailing injured game and to identify protected species.

5. Lastly since you are brand new to our breed what makes you think you have the capability of breeding dogs that have the ability to work as police dogs? Do you know what drives are needed? Can you identify those drives or lack thereof in individual dogs? Do you know how structure and nerves affect working ability? Again you have a resource in this bitch’s breeder. She knows Randy Tyson of Witmer –Tyson GSD who is a long time extremely knowledgeable GSD breeder of both show and working lines. Randy and Dave have owned and worked a number of the greats in our breed AND also supply k9s to police departments. Several of the dog in your girls pedigree are owned by them – Calimero ,Bronco and Bonnie and I also believe Randy bred to John Riboni’s Bruno several times ( your girl’s sire)

So the lesson is this . Slow down and pay attention to learning. This is just a different kind of school. Train your own dog BUT hang around and watch all the dogs get trained. Listen to the dogs voices – they often tell you more than your eyes. Go to trials not just schutzhund but also obedience, herding, agility. Each will teach something different about our breed and its capabilities. Herding is the original work of GSDs and is also characterized by the subtext of obedience in drive because let me tell you 30 sheep booking it at 30 mph are as exciting to a dog with high prey as any helper can be. Learn about structure – it’s important so go to breed (conformation) shows also. Ask, ask , ask about all of this about dogs, pedigrees and most especially LISTEN and LEARN. That has to be your agenda for quite awhile not breeding your bitch. Learn to be a steward of the breed and what that means and the responsibilities that are inherent to it. If you are willing to do that there are many in the breed and on this board that will gladly mentor you. Oh and first and foremost – get a thick skin. GSDs attract a tough crowd. We are passionate about our dogs and our breed and quick to protect it. So if you ask for public advice be prepared to take what comes. Good luck. You have a pretty bitch with a good pedigree – a good beginning so time to get to work.

Wow, what TIG said is PERFECT!!! Could not have said it better!! I know nothing about the dog and did not try to do so. This person knows oh so much about pedigrees and the individual dogs and the possibilities of what two dogs could produce in many different ways. TIG also seems to know the people around your dog and I do not. Until I saw the picture of your beautiful dog, I thought you had purchased her from a trashy place, but TIG has shown you what a wonderful dog you were able to obtain. Do NOT waste the time, effort, and knowledge TIG has given you.

I might add with all the good stuff TIG has given you, that you learn to read your dog as if she were talking to you. Years ago my girl Karma whom I bred and who gave me my Leda wanted something from me and to tease her I pretended not to know what she wanted. I told my mother sitting across from me that I sure did not know and she knew I was teasing Karma. So Karma stood up went over and close to my mother turned around and sat looked at me. My mother said you better give her what she wants and I said ok. All my dogs need to do is to look at me and I know what they are thinking. People can see our teamwork.

Again please re-read TIG's post several times as the goal is to help both you and your dog. She may sound bossy but you have so much going for you in dog, her breeding, her breeder, people around her. Please do not ruin her. Look out for her not just you. My current girl had a horrible abusive life before she came to me. The top vet surgeon in Ca told me she is spoilt, but no, she is just getting all the best I can give her to partially to make up what she did not receive as a puppy. She has some wonderful genes but she will not be bred and we will do some wonderful things in life. TIG did not mention therapy work. Dog used to be a Therapy Dog, but we had to stop, but that is really her forte doing therapy on people who do not think they need it. Giving to humans when they betrayed her. She and I will work together to help humans and also work sheep in addition. Maybe do more obedience work not just breed the heck out of her!

Get back and re-read TIG's post until you have it memorized. Besides TIG's sources, look at mine as they will also help you!!
