Thanks for that post, and the pictures of Simon! I really appreciate it. I hope we are so lucky with our own experience, getting the tumor out and gone for good!

And you are correct, I could care less about any scar. I am wanting my Mojo with me for many more years to come.

He does not act like an old dog, either. I think Beau would be lost without him, too.

Even if it turns out benign, you still want it off quickly
'cos not only can allowing them to get big result in
problems with closing the skin when they are operated
on, but these lumps on legs when allowed to grow too
big can really interfere with walking. Seen some 'orrrible
ones, mainly on Labradors, owners have put off getting
surgery on, and its not pretty to see how the dog slows
down, and tries not to knock the lump. (I could kill pet
owners sometimes !)

Hoping the growth turns out to be benign.

Me too! They are operating now! I'll know more, later. The Dr. repeated again her thought that mast cell in GSD is not common. Agreed that his licking of it was indicative of his discomfort. I said, yes, from what I've been learning with mast cell cancers, that would be the histamines causing him to suddenly, now be licking at it. And yet, she was hesitant to agree with me.

Well, she's going to do a biopsy, at any rate, and I'll know soon enough. The thing is coming off, no matter what.

Best to remove it with a good margin and THEN biopsy the mass..  

Biggest regret with my old cat.. vet I trusted punched a hole doing a biopsy in a tiny lump on her leg.. against what I told him to do..  spread it like wildfire..eventually killing her.

Later on the specialist told me a lump/bump on a dog, not so concerning, but ANY lump or bump on a cat, remove...

I just now got off the phone with the vet. And I am now a bit more concerned. She removed the cyst/tumor but noticed there was surrounding area that was not looking normal, all red and inflamed. Because of the location and how it was intertwined with veins, and the fact that she had to make a much bigger incision she said she did not get to remove all of the suspect area. The biopsy results will be back in 5 -7 days. If it comes back benign, then we treat the inflammation with drugs and antibiotics. If it is cancer, we have to rethink a new plan. There is a specialist in the next town she said that does radiation but I should wait and see what we find out for sure as to what we are dealing with.

I can pick him up early evening. Poor Mojo. I am probably going to need to get him a donut head thing for him so he won't rip out his bandage and stitches?

Frankly, this stinks.

A REAL donut from me for him ! ( Maybe better a steak? )
Don´t worry too much, you tried your best, and I am more than sure you will continue to do so if necessary.
Mojo doesn´t think about it , he only wants to feel comfortable, so that´s your main job now.

So sorry about your dog.I will pray for you that it is not cancer.
