joanro, I'm NOT giving praziquantel every month or at all, because the Sentinel product I'm using doesn't have praziquantel in it--it's just the milbemycin oxime [which is the HW preventative, and also control hooks, whips & rounds] and the lufenuron [which interferes with the chitin production in the repro cycle of the flea, thus breaking that cycle].
As for why someone would want to use Sentinel Spectrum, which includes the praziquantel...I'd expect it would be to control infection in their dog from not only the tapeworm species that uses the flea as its intermediate host, but the other species of that parasitic worm as well. Has nothing to do with not wanting to monitor the health of the dog, but rather with a need to give consideration to what each person's dog will be exposed to on a regular basis, and provide protection that best suits that dog.
Ivermectin isn't a one-trick pony product, either, as you know--it has broad-spectrum anthelmintic efficacy as well, so there is no 'better/worse' comparison between milbemycin oxime and ivermectin, save for the fact that the former does not pose the risk to Collies and related herding breeds found with the latter product.
Jen, whether it was a GSD, a Chihuahua or a Heinz-57 mix doesn't matter--nothing created by humans can be guaranteed to be 100% safe for every person or animal in which it's intended to be used, and when it's your own dog and it has an adverse reaction, it's only logical to not feel comfortable using the product that was responsible for that effect again, that's all I was trying to convey.
