Total absence of even one white hair is rare even in solid blacks if you are there at birth of the puppies.  I have bred and owned a lot of solid blacks .. the white spotting gene is present in the GSD regardless of color and is independent of dog breeds and should not be worried about.  These white spots in solid black GSD occur along midlines and folding creases when the embryo is developing.  It has nothing to do with white GSD in the pedigree in most cases although very many GSD have a white ancestor if you go back to the founding GSD of the breed.  Most white hairs on toes either brown, disappear under the foot as the dog grows or never get any larger (i e 4-5 follicles will still be 4-5 follicles).  When a black gsd is injured some of the hairs in the injured area may come back white and these were not there at birth.  Unless a GSD has a white tip on his tail or a white nose at birth I would no worry.  A lot of red or orange leather as will red coloring in the coat will darken with age when the adult coat starts coming in.  A pic of a solid black male with a spot.  He was reddish coated and skinned with a white spot on his chest at birth. The spot increased slightly with age but is smaller at maturity than it was at birth ( size as a percentage of body size ).  As a puppy just after birth the white hairs stand out on blacks more than other colors so they are easier to find but many solid blacks have a few white hairs on the midline folding areas (center chest and along midline stomach), toes, etc. but by the time a new owner gets the puppy they may not be noticeable and by the time the dog is an adult a few brown hairs and white hairs under the paws may be there to find if you know where to look.

I have only ever had one black GSD who never had a single white hair or didn't develop areas of bleeding or random white as they aged.

Okay thanks for all the information i tried to upload a picture of her. I cant seem to upload it right, its asking for a url.

we will see how the white comes with age. I believe it will fade since it is just a few hairs. This is the first solid black GSD i have had so i was just curious.

Thanks again.

I have a solid black female right now. She has always had white on her chest and a little bit of white on her back foot. It was pretty big as a puppy, but it's since gotten less noticeable. The white in her chest is only a really thin strip of white and her white that was on her back toes has almost disappeared.

Thank you for explaining your experience. I'm pretty sure her white will go away.

You worry about the wrong thing my friend. Worry about if the dog can kick ass when someone brakes into your house.  So to speak.  5 hair on the chest may be Ok discussion of genetics but otherwise it  is totally  non issue from larger scheme of things.

Yes even if the hairs stay it is no big deal to me. It's just a question I thought I'd ask. No worries.
