The GSDCA does have an optional code of ethics that members can sign or not. Don't blame it all on the GSDCA, look at the big picture. As I've said in another post regarding this topic, an AKC sanctioned club in the US has its hands tied as far as who it can or cannot accept into membership. I doubt the GSDCA will be the only breed club in which Hunte will eventually become a member; it would stand to reason he'd start with one of the oldest and most wealthy AKC sanctioned clubs. Without going into more boring details, the bottom line is - anyone with the desire and the money for the dues will gain membership in an AKC sacntioned breed club. Dog clubs are not a matter of national security, they are dog clubs with open memberships. If an applicant is refused membership and, if they sue, they will win at great expense to that club. Most breed clubs are not weathly organizations and they cannot afford a costly lawsuit. We can thank the legal system in the this country for the fact that we will be seeing more Andrew Huntes joining up with AKC sanctioned breed clubs and all breed clubs. We can also thank ourselves and our attorneys for telling us we can sue for anything in the US that even hints of being a violation of our civil rights and that suit will be upheld in a court of law. I can guarantee you if Andrew Hunte would have been refused memberhip in the GSDCA they would have been in civil court. A non-sanctioned AKC club has a lot more say over who they accept or don't accept as a members; however, a non-AKC club cannot descriminate and/or violate anyone's civil rights either if they offer an open membership. It's popular to blame the AKC for everything that has gone wrong with the GSD in America - they let anyone breed dogs and have no requirements other than the correct paperwork. I think if we would all stop and really think about it, it's not the fault of the AKC, they are not a policing agency, they registered dogs period. Let's put the blame where it belongs - on the big money breeders for making the bad decisions and using the substandard dogs for breeding. They also don't care to whom they sell their dogs and most likely prefer not to have owners who are ethical themselves. Here in the US we get our share of bad dogs exported to us from Germany. The SV rules don't prevent that from happening. Breeding only titled dogs is certainly no assurance that the progeny will be worthy. Evidentally some breeders in Germany have figured out how to get past the SV watchdogs; otherwise how do we get so many poor quality expensive dogs from Germany? Anyone can organize a closed-memberhip dog club right here in the US. That club can be for GSD breeders only, can dictate rules that must be followed in order to be accepted and to retain membership. It just cannot be an AKC sanctioned club. The SV could establish an arm of their organization right here in this country if they wanted to, but I can promise you that sooner or later, if they offered an open membership, they too would be in court being accused of descrimination the minute they refused membership to an applicant or expelled someone for violating one of their rules. I've asked this before and no one has answered me, are there not breeders in Germany who do not abide by SV rules and who registered their litters with another organization? It's the American way; we love being able to make our own decisions in this country, the reason why most of us are here today via our immigrant ancestors. Don't mean to turn this into a sermon, but you can't have it both ways. You cannot fight every piece of dog legislation that comes before the local lawmakers because it will mean that you might have to make some adjustments to the way you keep your own dogs or records, but expect the Huntes of the dog world to abide by those same rules. It still goes back to the old saying - you can't legislate morality.

Folks, it's all about money. This man is a virtual pot of gold for GSDCA and the AKC. If you're really interested, look into the major dog food company that he has developed an economic relationship with. Many of you use their product and they support each other.

Blitzen; What is the point of voting whether or not someone can be a member of GSDCA if they can't legally say no? Germany is also a democratic society, but as a whole, they have certainly been better stewards of the breed than we have in the USA. I agree corruption and poor breeders exist in Germany, but certainly not like here.

It's' just going through the motions, Sueincc. It's following the election to membership process as outlined in their Constitution and By-Laws. Their by-laws say the person applies on a form approved by the BOD, the name goes into the Review for comments, any comments are copied to the applicant and they are invited to rebut any. Then they are voted upon by the Board of Directors. At one time dog clubs were able to pick and choose who they accepted into their rank and file. Not anymore thanks to due process. I believe Hunte was elected by a slim majority of those voting. Some clubs require sponsors, the GSDCA does not. However, even that is no assurance that there won't be 2 other members who could be conned into sponsoring a puppy miller. Also, if there were no election process there could be no membership roster used to collect dues or to use for other reasons like where to mail the monthly publication. Given the entire country of Germany is the size of Wisconsin, there are less breeding GSD's and it's esier to monitor them. Also those not following the SV rules are not allowed to register with the SV. I don't know for sure and so far no one has told me if there are other dog registeries in Germany other that the SV. People are people no matter where they live and if left to their own devices, the dishonest ones will always find a way to circumvent the system. We already know that more than a few breeders in Germany farm out pg bitches in order to stay below the 10 litters a year regulation. There are rumors of midnight trials and Santa judges both here and in Germany. Substituting dogs for hip and elbow xrays, breeding dogs with health issues, that stuff goes on everywhere according to what I hear and read. I honestly don't think any rules can keep out the bad seeds. The horse is already out of the barn, no point in locking the door now.

Why do you say "if there were no election process there could be no membership roster used to collect dues or to use for other reasons like where to mail the monthly publication"? I belong to a number of organizations that do not elect members, but I still pay annual dues & get the magazines!

by Blitzen on 24 February 2007 - 17:02

Because an AKC sanctioned breed club has to follow the by-laws and those by-laws have to be approved by AKC. AKC requires a breed club to elect it's members and to keep records of those members and to provide the same information to each member using those rosters. It is possible to subscribe to their monthy publication without being a member. I don't know how other clubs conduct their business, but any AKC affiliate will be electing members and keeping rosters or they will lose their AKC priviledges. AKC sanctioned clubs march to a different drummer than do non-sanctioned local clubs.

What I meant is, what is the difference between the type of kennel Kyle mentions, and a kennel that DOES title their dogs? Just because one breeds titled dogs does not mean they are not a puppy mill mass producing. ----------------- Kyle said: What's the difference between him and any kennel that produces X amount of GSD litters per year without titling a dog?
