"Jenni is right, very few people have the natural talent and especially the time to dedicate to train a dog to the level that Bart is able to train a dog at."
That´s more than true, but it´s always easier to blame the dog.

Instant gratification mentality prevails in dog training, too. If they watch one DVD and the dog isn't totally trained, on to the next, half the time with a different trainer, now they are trying multiple methods and wonder why their dog is getting worse and not better. It's like people buying a treadmill and thinking they'll lose weight just by looking at it.
Similar to Joan's story, I sold a dog as a pup to a family where the owner had not had dog experience except for a Collie, IIRC. I chose him the most balanced, calmest pup with good drive (more food than anything else) but not anything over the top, planning on him being a child's playmate and maybe dabbling in a few activities. Well, that dog's owner decided to get into IPO and they took home I believe it was 3 or 4 trophies at his first shot at IPO1 at Regionals, and is now IPO3 AND full time PET. IE, the dog has not been replaced for a dog who is "easier" to train, despite a few glitches, he is not kept isolated from his family in a 5x5 on the back of the property line so he "explodes" on the field, and he is adored by a couple little girls. THIS is the type sport home I would like to sell to- as Joan said, you can pretty much keep the rest.
I'm not on board with the mentality that you can put nothing into the relationship, get some trophies, and move on to the next piece of livestock. I don't blame the trainers for this at all; I blame the cultural "I want it now" that is so widespread. Same as breeding....if I had a nickel for every time someone buying their first "good" GSD wanted a dog with the intention of breeding....
No one wants to do it the old-fashioned way, the hard way, the slow way...gotta have it yesterday.

now wait one second! do you want me to believe that the bottle of vodka i just bought will not make me as good looking as the guy on TV selling it? I want my money back. A wise man learns from everyone, a fool learns from no one

Great forum discussion. I must say i agree whole heartedly with the statements of susie that the breed will benefit most from grass root efforts. It is within my time in Dogs that positive motivation became more and more popular. I played sports thru my youth into adulthood. I love to watch pro atheletes do what they do. I am very aware that I play as far below the rim as Lebron James plays above it, but you can dream and learn.
