OK. I guess my reply was a little off-topic. But then, my whole life could be described as "a little off-topic." Ha ha ha ...and it doesn't seem to be getting better with age! Apologies for any confusion. No malice or aggravation intended. Shelley

A very lot of years ago... (tee hee) A female wolf got shot by our neighbors for killing his chickens. About a week later I was coming home one evening to see *something* in the front of the house. A small puppy about 5 weeks old. I managed to coax him to me with the help of some meat and it was a baby wolf. I raised that wolf for 2 yrs until *the call of the wild* came upon him and he disappeared off the farm. (Gladiola Farm- no animals). Now, my wolf was timid but no matter where I was he layed facing me but never too close. I came home from work one day and the Roofer was up on the roof afraid to come down as *Partner* would not let him. I came home another day and he delivered a live chicken to me as I stepped out of the car... He was getting old enough to want to provide for me... They are indeed strange and nothing like a GSD. He was never mine, even tho I thought he was.. he belonged to the wild. He was truly aloof and when company was over he disappeared down the hall.. but where he could still see me. The local pound picked him up but then returned him to the farm after a few newspaper articles in regards to him being a wolf and not a dog and he was not in captivity... Our contention was he was he roamed the farm, the woods and came and went in and out of our house by his choice as an animal of the wild. My Shepherds, well even the Maltese I used to have can have a *relationship* with people.. They can be enjoyed.. trusted. Although a wolf will BOND with a human.. their loyalty belongs to the wild. They are very unpredictable around people they do not know. My experience... BUT- That was then.. This is Now.

An aspect of this thread concerns Czech lines and wolves. I assume that most of you know there is a breed called the Czech Wolfdog? Looks like a sable wolf crossed at least in part with gsd. As I understand it, there is in fact wolf in the early generations of that breed. Perhaps some confusion of those wolfdogs and czech gsd's got that rumor started?

I should have read the full thread. Sorry. I see you already know about the Czech Wolfdogs...

"The Czech Wolfdog was started by a breeding experiment started by the z Pohranicni straze breeding station (and the other Czech breeding stations) as a way to create a more suspicious dog for police/Military/Border Patrol work. I think the first breedinfgs were done in the 60's with the last GSD x Wolf breeding done in the late 70's/early 80's between Bojar v Schotterhof & a Carpathian She-Wolf.

What was created were dogs that were basically too spooky to do any real work with and the gov't abandoned the program. To me, it's telling when the people that started the program abandoned it because of failure to accomplish the stated goals. Yet, people continued to perpetuate them...."

Does anyone know of any further reading material anywhere on this topic?

My contract actually states that the buyer agrees to not use my pups "for the breeding of any wild dog or domestic dog hybrid".

I have a bad taste in my mouth for these crosses, everyone I've ever met was difficult to train, completely unsuitable for living in a home. Most people I've met own them strictly for ego.

Wanting to use wolves for breeding is a very big issue with my original breed, Alaskan Malamutes. Since Mals and wolves look a lot alike, some think it's a great idea to breed them together. The national breed club forbids breeding Malamutes to wolves and any member who does that is liable for disciplinary action and expulsion from the club.

Been reading the above, I have been asked more than once if my GSD is part wolf. I always snicker to myself and think the person is just unfamilar with the look of a Sable and he's got a long coat. He's 3/4 czech and from the pohranicni straze line just gave me something to think about hmmmmmm. I'm sure he's not

For what it's worth I think it's a horrible practice to try to breed wolves with any domesticated dog. I see no sense to it, some people need bragging rites I guess. I don't know.

I found a site that tells of alot of dogs in the GSD history have wolf blood in it.
