I've never fed Origen, not because I don't think it's a good food, because i think the price is outrageous and there are other commercial foods available for less money that are good too. I'm only feeding one GSD, have had her on Victor grainfree for about 7 months after feeding TOTW for a long time. She's isn't a picky eater, consumes every meal like she's on death row, so flavor isn't an issue with her. She's a big female, at least 80 lbs and eats 1 cup 2 times a day plus a scant 1/4 cup as a bedtime snack.
PS- I feed the Yukon River salmon and sweet potato.

a lot have commented on the price of Orijen (me included) and its unanimous, the cost of it sucks. I find it odd that i have to budget out my dog's food cost i mean come on, its dog food LOL... Maybe i am just naive, but i truly do believe that the quality of the ingredients is better (humane grade and fit for human consumption). I remember they lost a kitchen due to a fire and because Champion would not deviate from its quality control, the dog food became very scarce and they lost $$ in sales because they were not willing to outsource their production. I have not heard of Champion products getting recalled and i look often. I just have not come across another brand of kibble that has the same reputation as Champion pet foods. I know that there are other great products like Stella and Chewy's, Honest Kitchen, Merrick, Lifes Abundance just to name a few. But all these products are equally expensive and some cost even more. The point to this long ramble is this, I am responsible for my dogs dietary health and if i am not going to source my own ingredients and then make the food for them then i need to at least provide them with the best quality of food that i can.

I don't think Orijen is that expensive when I do the math. My dogs eat way less Orijen, and there is no other food I know of whose ingredients are the same quality or are processed in the way Orijen is. Just the look, smell, and feel of the kibble is different than any other large, commercially-produced food. I have tried pretty much everything and while my dogs could eat rocks and be ok, there just seems to be no comparison between Orijen and "regular" kibble.
I NEVER FEED ORIJEN TO PUPPIES. There is now a LBP formula that is likely ok, but I still am cautious.

I commented on the Senior Orijen Thread and I'll comment on this one.
I rotate my dogs through Orijen Six fish, Acana Grasslands, and Orijen Adult.
I feed my 90 lb male 3 cups a day and my 73 lb female (full sister to Jyl's dog Ice) 2 1/2 cups a day. They go through a 30 lb bag (roughly) every 2 1/2 weeks.
Both have beautiful coats, Good muscle tone, great teeth and ZERO issues with the food or when I transition between foods.
When you use the multiple bag buy program it helps bring the cost of the food down $10 per bag. For example, it takes the Acana Grasslands from $78 to $66. Plus my food store gives me an additional 5% discount.

To answer the question ( I think from Jenni).... no I did not over feed Ice on the Orijen. I tried to keep Ice on it, but he had very loose stools for weeks. I even took him to the vet to make sure nothing was wrong... Ice was treated for Giardia and Coccidia (just in case) as well as I had multiple stool samples checked.
Once I got Ice off of the Orijen and onto a food that he could handle that was not as rich he got better.... However Ice has bad food allergies. So it is really hard to find a food that he did well on. I ended up doing to food allergy test thru Dr. Jean Dodds as well as spoke to her on the phone... As well as I had multiple trips to the vet for ear infections, yeast infections in his feet and around his anus... Ice has cost me a fortune at the vets in the year and a half that I have had him... (not to mention he has lameness issues, that are not pano either. Do not want to derail this thread so will not go further on this here. )
Ice is allergic too... Chicken, Turkey, Duck, Rabbit, Fish, Rice and Barley, wheat, corn( no I never feed anything with corn or wheat), and oatmeal.
I put Ice on Natural Choice lamb and potato... he did VERY well on it.... until Natural Choice discontinued it... so I went on a "food search" again. I am switching Ice to Earthborn Meadow Feast. It is lamb and grain free Whole Earth Farms. So far so good...
So Orijen may work for some. As clc29 mentioned, Ava who is Ice's sister is doing great on the Orijen as well as some other people on here.. so I am glad that it works for most. It just did not work for my dog at all.

As long as my dog continues to do well eating Victor, I probably won't change or try to fix something that's not broken. If she does seem that it may not be the best food for her, I'll probably go with a homemade diet using locally grown organic products from the local Fresh Market as I am doing now for my own food.

I haven't tried it for our dogs but I have two friends who feed Orijen foods and sing praises for it. The cost is pretty high but that may change in the not too distant future. Orijen is building a plant in a small community about 14 miles from Bowling Green, KY which should help reduce the cost of shipping from their current plant(s). The latest info I heard was the plant is scheduled to open in the fall or 2015. Interestingly, HIlls Science Diet foods are also produced here in Bowling Green.

Blitzen, very jealous you can get Victor near you! I have to order it on ebay to get it here. Really wanting to try a couple of those formulas on one of the Pits who looks fantastic on Orijen, but has to eat a lot more of it than I'd like. I think she does better w/a little more starch. Again, looks and acts great but eats as much as my GSDs and only weighs 32lbs.
Jyl, I don't think it was me other than my general question about how much everyone was feeding that was having loose stool issues; you and I have talked about poor Ice in the past. I wouldn't question you again about him. I'd still say that dog sounds like he has candida issues/intestinal permeability that's starting a domino effect, but this thread isn't really the place for that. Poor baby.
I don't see Orijen bringing the price down, regardless of a new plant or whatever; if you look at what other companies are now charging and getting away with it, why should they? Horizon is almost that high and I don't think it's nearly as good, and there's a slew of others, even heavily inclusive of grains, that are almost on par with them, and if you do the math on quantity fed, they are just as high.
