I would make it a closed account which means anyone can see who the members are but they can't read the messages or post. Members would be forbidden to share any of the account posts with non-members. I don't have any personal info on my own account, only have it because I needed it to generate my Mal account. I never friend anyone I don't know well and frankly I rarely even read my own page. Also FB has an option were you can block others from seeing your page or from sending pm's. Many put too much info on their open account FB pages, DOB. where they live, all about their families, etc.. Some don't allow public access to their page, it's closed to all but their friends. FB is as safe as you make it.

FB is the greatest surveillence tool the FBI never invented, i see a court case about to open with social media providers trying to stop the US gov from monitoring, storing and using member info without the member's knowledge or consent.
the acroynom FB I has taken on a new meaning.

FB only has the information members give them. The same would apply here and on every internet site. Women who use hyphenated names and list their DOB's are asking to have their identities stolen. Every time I read that so and so has a birthday today, write something on their wall, I cringe. All that is needed on an internet account such as this is to list your dog's registered name or a specific title it has earned or where or when or the judge, breeder, sire dam and..... bingo..... a computer nerd who can't hold down a job frying burgers has stolen your identify and you get a bill for a $1,000 case of wine and a lobster dinner for 30. I won't go into details about my stalkers from this database. No one's fault, it's just the way things work today. It's a brave new world that is populated by wingnuts who give normal people a bad reputation.

I was asked by another admin if this was poaching members and my first reaction was yes, but ya know the more I think about it the less I really care. Pretty soon if not already Facebook will start wanting your credit card numbers because they are going to start a paypal like component

Lets be honest here, it takes way more info than you provide this site or that one openly puts on the internet to steal an identity. They would need at least a social security number, your address or your credit card number. Most people who get their identity used online to purchase something either the hacker got into a corporate system and took info, you click on a link in an email from someone you know but the email account was hijacked and you are now going to a site that just installed a keylogger on your computer or the bad people simply bought it off a site where someone hacked a bank, a store or other places you have entered that info. The only thing you are required to provide here on sign up is a user name and email account hardly enough to worry about, IMHO.
Facebook is notorious for privacy rights problems and not really a place I would want to hang out.

i would agree that some blatant soliciting and recruitment is occurring in this thread, bless them. but so what, most puppy threads, future litter threads and such are blatant free advertisements as well.

Acutally there is no FB account. I was not asking for names of those who wish to join, I asked if there would be any interest in yet another GSD breed board IF I generated one. I provided my pesonal email for response. I checked all the rules and TOS's here before I opened this thread and could see no reason that subject would be in violation of any of them. If I missed that, then I would ask admin to delete this thread and define "poaching".
Also, I specifically said that the object would not be to compete with this board which offers far more than any FB account ever could. My goal would be to offer a less threatening environment for breed discussion. I also said that in my experience FB is a more popular venue for dog discussion these days and IMO it will only become more popular. I said I switched my own breed board from Yahoogroups to FB and told of how that move increased the membership and led to a more productive and popular venue to talk dogs. Anyone who has read this board and others that are not FB accounts knows that participation has dropped off dramatically. Another thread here asking why so many no longer post here got me to thinking why that was. Maybe they'd prefer a FB account?
I understand that some don't like FB and find it too invasive, a FB account will not be for them. However there are literally millions of people who do like FB and some are probably GSD owners who might be interested. As far as safety goes, just don't lay bare your personal information for everyone to read and keep your page private. Not 100% protection, but common sense to not tell the world what size underwear you wear. No one internet site is secure. Identity theft can be used for illegal actions where your SS is not necessary. A moderately intelligent hacker can figure out passwords and answer security questions to enter bank accounts and credit card accounts or to make internet purchases knowing only your DOB, former name/s, residencies, work places. If they can't figure it out, they can hire a professional hacker who can. Google your name and address and see what you can find out about youself without entering a SS number.

Blitzen I accidentally posted a response to you on Ibahims thread. I was in the middle of banning a scammer with a bunch of names, deleting their ads and posting in the admin forum and I posted to the wrong thread which shifted the conversation to that thread. So, Ibrahim and Blitzen sorry I crossed the 2 threads together.

Blitzen I agree with you about the privacy issues. There are groups I am on that don't allow sharing of posts and in order for you to join you are definately checked out--a closed group in other words. I am very good with that. I belong to one GSD group there and there is a lot of interest--and many knowledgeable people there--of course just as many people who have no clue and who do need education from the right people. I just think it is a great idea. And there is much knowledge here as well. I have learned so much and made outside friends--I mean off the board--the main thing I hate here is when you have opinions or even facts and you state them, if folks don't agree with you let the name calling begin. I think with a well run group there it would be much easier to control that. IMO anyway cause I do see it happening over there.

I'm like vk. I'm probably prebanned because we all know that Petra is the best in the world. Dang it that probably made me twice banned because that was off the original topic.
