Keith do you have any Schutzhund type pics with that lens? I have a 50mm f/1.8 which is good for flyball and portraits but I HATE trying to use it for anything else dog-related. I wanted to sell it and everyone told me I was nuts so I didn't but I guess I'm just not using it right.

I do have some but not with me at the moment. The 1.8 is a fine lens and will work well under normal lighting. The 1.4 just provides some extra capability is less than ideal light or where you want both depth of field and clarity. I would recommend using shutter priority mode with as fast a shutter speed as you can get away with. 1/1000 sec is ideal. In the olden days with film, we would "push" the film to get a little more light gathering capacity out of it. I shot a lot of ASA 400 black and white film and would often set my ASA to 1600 which adds some grain to the pictures but allows you to use a fster shutter speed to record action in questionable light. You can do the same with your digital camera by changing the ASA, just keep in mind that you may sacrifice some detail in exchange...but never as badly as we got with film.

Love the third one down GSDnewbie, awesome shot!
VKGSD's such incredible action shots, so clear!
Not a Nikon, but I asked my friend to get some shots of Mr. Lucky at training as it was starting to get dark out, so she was putting the camera on different settings, and she got this, I thought it was pretty cool, just picking up the lettering on his shirt, although...Mr. Lucky was a blur....

nice dog newbie. I remember seeing an "Ulf" at a show, maybe Kentucky, and thinking a very nice young dog. could this be him.

by GSDNewbie on 29 May 2014 - 11:05
Thanks, but I have not "shown" in KY. Been in KY, but did not show there and we were not at a show. We have shown in Texas, North Carolina with Ulf. We had a very large turnout for our club show in NC and that is where most have met him. Ulf is also just a shortened version of his name and I am sure there must be a few running around.
