I have noticed bvehavioral changes during heat cycles first hand.
I had a bitch (my first schutzhund dog) who came into season three times a year. Her personality changed drastically each time. The first heat cycle of the year, usually in February/March, she became a nervy POS! The bitch would spook from me pulling a Kleenex out of the box...then destroy the entire box of Kleenex during the night. She acted up so much that it was embarassing to take her out in public during that cycle.
The second cycle of the year, May/June, she was nearly her normal self, but a bit "softer" than usual and very sensitive to me. She could be trialed during this phase, and acted normally when in public. But, she was noticeably much better in July/August
The third heat cycle of the year (September/October) she was freaking Godzilla on the field. She was really impressive in the bitework --she even looked like she was physically bigger. Nothing on Earth phased her, and she had some ugly experiences during that time of the year. She was the most resilient dog I ever saw, as long as anything bad happened late in the year. Best time to trial!
This same bitch bit me and sent me to the emergency room three times, once requiring 17 stitches. Those events all occurred during the March/April period...until I learned to just leave the bitch alone when she was being moody! I don't know whether that counts as operant conditioning, R+, P-, or what.
