You got me - I really don´t know exactly....
Some breeders ( the Martin brothers in front ) started x-raying for HD in the sixties - mandatory? I think somewhen in the early 80´s , but I really don´t remember.
ED somewhen in the early 2000´s , I think it was 2002.
DNA became mandatory in 1999, if I remember well.

DNA'ing for breed might get a little dicey: http://www.rsv2000.de/opencms/en/news/special-articels/breeding/genetische-differenzierung-des-dsh.html

This study was made in 2011 in Finland, and does show what happens to genetics without care.
But, after all, a "working dog" in Finland is a dog with a 5 generation pedigree of working titled ancestors, not more, not less.
Finland is not Germany ( if we follow their study, all of our German dogs would be working line dogs, because all of them do have titled ancestors ), but you should be able to compare the Alsatian to the Finland "showlines", with generations of breeding without testing working abilities.

ED 2004
HD I think around 1980, it was done before that but mandatory for breeding around that time

Are you sure about 2004, I thought it was 2002 ?!?
Giessen ( Tellhelm ) started in 2001 officially for SV, but this wasn´t mandatory at once.

Ok, thank you for your replies.
Now, If Germany, the bellwether of the breed, didn't make HD testing mandatory till the 80's, how could it be that a poor country, such as Czechoslovakia, make exraying mandatory or even have the means of exraying ? Did they even have exray machines for vet use, and if so, who could have afforded the use of it for something like hd testing for breeding purposes? In history, working breeds after all, were not tested for health, they either made it or not.....

I was too curious, and so I asked SV....
This sais, that HD became mandatory in 1998 ( ! ), I was totally wrong, because most of the breeders did x-ray far earlier. Amazing!
ED became mandatory in 2005 for all dogs born in 2004 and younger.
DNA became mandatory in 1998.
My memories haven´t been very accurate...
Kind regards,
Susie
