I know of one English guy, a fairly well known breeder / exhibitor
at the time (about fifteen years ago) who was doing this with his
GSD S/Lines, and anyone else he could persuade, particularly
if they had one of his breeding. Only time I came across it, but
yes I'm sure it goes on. Bloody stupid, IMO.

Yes, I have heard of them. While looking at supplements I came across an online store that has products, one is called K9 Super Fuel canine muscle builder, but this is for lean muscles and if the dog were to get sick and needed that extra boost or works extremely hard, and needed that extra help. Another one is for massive muscle building called MVP: http://www.xtremek9.com/MVP-M-A-S-S-muscle-building-formula-for-dogs-p/mvp-mass.htm, there was another, but I can't remember the page. I just don't see why a person would want a dog with massive muscles. I can see if it was lean muscles you can feel when going over the dog or if you needed to help the dog recover. I have seen American Bully's with the massive muscles and I didn't like what I saw.

Hey, they did it to the halter Quarter Horses in the seventies, eighties and nineties. Don't know if the AQHA ever got a handle on the abuse or not. Crippled the horses up so bad physically and mentally they could not be ridden; so those halter "Champions" did not have performance titles unless the titles were acquired before the drugs were administered. Pathetic......

A guy at my stable had his horse on steroids (prescribed by his vet) because it was losing weight. He went out to ride it one day, and it totally freaked out, reared up and fell over backwards on top of him. He was very, very lucky he was not seriously hurt, or even crippled for life.
I saw this happen with my own eyes, and boy, was it SCARY!. These are NOT drugs you want to be administering to a 1,200 lb. animal!

AMAC, I think I've seen that pic somewhere. Maybe in a medical journal/site? If it's the pic I'm thinking of, that dog's over-muscular appearance is the result of a rare disorder.

Maybe a rare disorder like Anabolic steroid injections to make that dog run faster. Problem is that the excess muscles are heavy and limit range of motion of limbs. I bet that dog would still be clearing the starting gate while rest of the field was already crossing the finish line.

I don't think I can find it again, but I swear, I've seen that pic in a journal of rare disorders...seriously. Or if not that, a similar-looking one. I'll look.

Well, I'm not convinced. Whatever the reason, the effects are the same....dog could breath better is she wasn't being choked by that collar.
