Moderate HD, the dog is obese and should be put on a diet,
terrible hips for a young dog, I would suggest swimming her,
and cutting way back on the snacks!

Moderate HD, fish oil, lose weight , swim, feed meat, and gristle. Dog should have no problem to get around almost as a normal dog for most  if not all her life.,.... is she is  in shape. Fish oil ( 1/2 table spoon per day) is a miracle against inflammation in joints. Dog is clearly favoring the left leg not necessarily because of pain but because the joint is weaker.  If there is a pain that may be caused by other issue.(!!!).

I would guess that the dog is spayed?

Yes the dog is spayed and I have been giving her a lecture about feeding Wink Smile she is being fed on raw anyway, just rather a lot of it....
The dog already gets Yumove and Fish Oil Omega3 capsules.

I wish I'd known about PDB when I found out just how dysplastic my GSD was in 2003 aged 8 months. She is nearly 11 yrs old now and is still mobile but with the most awful gait, she has been on Metacam & Tramadol  since 2006 and Gabapentin also for last 2 years plus Yumove & Fish Oil Omega3. There again, I don't think I would have put up the xrays because a certain person would have blamed the dam and not his stud dog... Roll eyes   She has yearly blood tests to check her liver/kidneys and they are perfect.

Thanks everybody for your replies.

Merry Xmas

Actually spaying will make it harder for her to lose her weight.

@Prager... Tell me about it.  Getting weight off my GSD has always been hard. She is a big bitch and had a good waistline, hardly any fat at 41kgs but I had to watch what I fed her [if she was a horse, she'd be described as a 'good doer']. Once she started deteriorating on her hind legs, she went on an even stricter diet! I finally managed to get her to 38kgs and she has stayed at that weight for a year now... she looks and feels skinny at that weight and is only being fed 150g more a day than my two border collies, one weighs 20.8kg and the other a pup at 14.5kg.

Historically what I have always done with my girls through the years is slightly reduce their food intake from the moment they are spayed, in anticipation of weight gain due to the consequences of spaying. It's something which has seemed to work for me, and we have always managed to maintain their original weight.  OTOH maybe I've just been lucky.

I had to cut my bitch back 30% to start after spaying, seemed the first year is when she put on the most weight;  went to raw diet she still packed the weight;  cut her back AGAIN, she thought I was starving her and is still cut back to 2 l/2% of her body weight or about l l/2 lbs of food per day.  Sometimes she gets a little tiny bit more BUT cutting her back so drastically has made her food aggressive and sneaky about stealing food from anyone, dog or human, any time.  Still feed raw but a balanced pre-made diet with chicken breasts instead of pre-made raw 2 or 3 times per week.  Good luck

@Nans gsd

My bitch gets 450g - 500g a day depending if fed veg too. (500g =17.6 ounces. ... 500g = 1.10231 lbs)

Normally it's 450g of raw and 50g or thereabouts of mulched carrots and finely shredded green veg/apple/celery etc. The two collies get about 300g each a day, the pup probably over that as she is still growing, she was weighed again today and was 15.7kgs

That sounds about right spooks for all, excluding growing puppies.  The good thing about vegi's is they are low-cal and I used to use chopped cabbages mixed with other ground vegi's and added some ground turkey or other ground meats, either raw or slightly flash heated;  that way they can have more if more vegi's are added.  No carbs though...(grains are also excluded).  But have had pretty good luck with cabbages, kales and lettuces (like romaine) so they think they are getting something extra, also packs a real vitamin punch.  Just food for thought, happy holidays,  Nan
