I work my dog with a Mondio club at times and many breeds are represented. 3 Beaucerons, several Dobermans, 2 Bouviers, GSD's, Mali's, Pits, Rotti's, Dutchies, and a few others...
Its very educational to see the similarities in each breed and also the differences between the breeds. So far I'm not 100% impressed with the Beaucerons or Bouviers for this sport. Yes its only 5 dogs in total, a very small sample, that its hard to say. They do OK, and their owners work with them, but just not for me.
I did get to house a Beauceron for a few days and that was all I could stand for this particular dog. He was not smart (actually he was stupid), had "0" drives, not trained, and very, very destructive. Oh, and the extra dew claws took a bit of getting used too. IMO, the breed is becoming the "breed of the month", which is never a good thing.
I'm sure there are some good ones out there, but as with all breeds, sifting thru the junk takes plenty of research.

ITSGSD the german sheperd is too hairy for my taste, the rottweiler is way too hairy for me, heck my current American bulldogs is almost too coated for my taste. Bercurons have thick double coats, more like the rottie then a average shepherd. Any breeds that can produce tumble weeds of blown coat i do not want living in my house. It's the downside of being a retired dog groomer.
But from afar it's a really pretty breed of dog, the harlequins are very striking.

I have to say my Bouviers had shed way less them my GSDs.. Their hair came out in a few clumps, my shep's have hair everywhere LOL.. The older grandma had crazy ball drive. Bomba would crack us up, blind as a bat, big, clumsy, geriatric dog wrestling her big Jolly ball through the house. She loved to play, even into her last days. My girl Palai didn't have ball drive, she was very protective and brave, but hard headed. She was very alert to people getting too close to her family, she'd put herself between strangers and me or kids. She'd just stare down people, she was well behaved on leash, but I couldn't let strangers pet her. In the yard, she would hit the fence and bark at strangers, but out, she was mellow, until someone came too close. But again she was 5 when I got her, a retired breeder, who never really was socialized. The younger one my mom has, has ball drive, she isn't as steady as her mom and granny. If someone puts pressure on her, she'll back down.. They had all been very different, and they were related..I'd love to get another, but I want a working line, I don't really care for the smaller show lines..
I was curious about the Beaucerons, I liked their looks, but never had any real contact with one..
Thanks everyone for the comments!! :)

Erin j: I thought I was the only person that would name a dog Bomba.

Bomba was imported from Holland by a kennel I worked for. She ended up after being sold, in a shelter. I adopted her after learning that she was in a shelter and no longer wanted. Her name was already that, but I loved her name, fit her so well! She was a puppy in an old dog's body, loved to wrestle and play, all day.. They definitely have personalities!!

Here is a picture of a Beauceron - as you can see they dont look anything like Bouvier. the two that I saw where about
130 pounds - (lean I might say for the size of these dogs) I dont know if they were standard - but they were very powerful
dogs and I have to say the crowd parted when each of them came up to go in to the round pen.... Here is a link to one that

The one Beauceron I had seen personally was a large dog. He was taller than my Bouvs, but my girls were thicker boned. I would imagine as with any breed, there will be variations from dog to dog. I've seen some small Bouviers..
Love the pic Yogi!! I do admire their appearance, I was just curious about temperament..

I have a Beauceron.
Harlequin female with natural ears.
Did great in agility. Tried SchH ( IPO ) and she just didn't have enough of the right stuff to work out. We did get our BH , TR1 , TR2 and TR3.
Just not serious enough in the sleevework. Will bite for real, just won't show that same commitment to a sleeve.
I wonder if she may have done better in ringsport ( but none in my area ).
Definately not a dog for much repetition. Would get creative very quickly. Almost like she has a sense of humor

She's retired now due to multiple health issues.

Brindle, I'm curious to know what sort of health issues she had. Is it a breed known for health issues? What ones are common?
