Yes, I took the dog to the vet, within a day or two of her arrival, we took care of the abscess, she didn't bounce back as expected, so we did blood tests 2 weeks later. She started the hw treatment and crate rest very soon after discovering them.

Its been several months since treatment and Taunya is now rehabilitating her.

She has one more blood test, along with ekg, ultrasound and xray required next month to see if the hw are gone for good, and the extent of the permanent damage from them.

wishing you the best.  sorry you had such an experience.  I know you are a good person and hate to hear of you having these kind of problems.

Were you given the option to return the dog for a refund?  I'm sure she is starting to feel much much better in your care.

Reggie, the pups that were already on preventative while with me did receive three months of heart guard after going to their new homes.
The range of heat worms has extended exponentially because of shipping affected animals and the mosquitoes transmitting it, I think, have adapted to colder climates.

I was given the option to return the dog, he would pay to ship her back, but I would have to pay the shipping on the second dog. A refund was out of the question.

Shipping is $1200 each way, so basically, I would end up paying $2400 to ship a dog that may or may not have been in any better condition.

I offered to call it even IF he would pay the what a local vet in Slovakia would have charged to treat these problems. It would have come out to about half the cost of shipping her back. But he even declined to do this. He vehemently states "there are no heartworms in Slovakia, you are trying to rip me off."

Dogs cannot be shipped that are contagious. The first heartworm test included her registered name and microchip number. Companies that test for heartworms are required to submit positive results. My vet would not approve a health certificate. If I'd gone to another vet, and been caught (when getting the international health certificate), I would have gotten into huge legal trouble.

I have purchased several dogs from Eurosport K-9 - Hero, Hana, Nurma, Lessy, Vanessa, and Hanah. One would think that he would have valued a customer that's brought so much income into the business, but this is not the case.

Vanessa, whom I purchased just after the divorce, came with an injury that took weeks of physical therapy to work thru. I didn't complain, I didn't ask for compensation. I should have taken that as a warning and quit doing business with him then, but I trusted him.

Joanro I wasn't addressing you.  I was sure you cover your basis in that area.  My post was mainly for those who may live in areas in which they think are unaffected by heart worms and may not have a lot of knowledge about them.  Things that we take for granted because we have been dealing with them for years may not even come up in their thought process because of never having dealt with such issues.

Joanro, heartworms ARE present in Canada (red dots), this info is a few years old, so its most likely moreso now.

Sorry to hear about your experience. I think the breeder is not truthful, there are heartworm problems in Slovakia, in fact about 20% of their Police K9 are infected in 2009, could be worse now if nothing was done. Here is the study : http://www.academia.edu/2516338/Dirofilaria_infections_in_working_dogs_in_Slovakia

Sitasmom, I don't doubt there are now, but they are not "native", so to speak. Shipping infected dogs and mosquitoes which transmit heartworm adapting to the cold climate, as I said before.
