Going to probe the collective memory here to see if I can track down a favourite dog book from childhood.
The Army was recruiting peoples' dogs to be trained as war dogs. There was a young lady in a wheelchair who had trained her dog to do retrieves of an object that was designed to fly off on an unpredictable path. I think the dog was named Lady, and she was white and on the small side for a war dog.
The army recruited the dog, and were about to return it as unsuitable, because they couldn't get it to attack. Then the helper accidentally hit the handler on the head with the weighted sack he was swinging around. The sack had a sharp-edged piece of wood inside it, and I think it cut the handler's forehead, and knocked him off his feet.
Lady immediately found her protective side, and attacked the helper with a vengeance! He said her attack was much more vicious and powerful than many of the much larger dogs he had worked with.
I know the book was based on fact, but I'm not sure if it was a fictionalized version of events, or true stories of the different dogs that were recruited for war duties.
Anyone else remember this book?

When your memory begins to fail you, and your dreams disappear when you open your eyes, you'll understand why it's not all that funny.
Golden years my ass.
Golden years my ass.
