Maybe a tick got it's way into the ear canal? If this just started, I would say Mojo is trying to tell you something, especially if it is localized to just one or 2 areas on Beau.
If it has been occurring for a while, it could just be a grooming thing. Rose still grooms Max, especially the head area.

My chihuahua used to have a habit of licking my dachshund everywhere. On her face, back, shoulders, legs, and he'd always lick so much to the point where her fur would be messed up from going in the opposite direction. I got some bitter apple spray, dabbed it on her and he eventually stopped.
