VFH, I like the idea about the Diatomacious earth! It won't hurt the dogs to feed it to them? Vickie

Cole, Safe for horses, who are much more sensitive than dogs, so I assume it would be fine for the dogs. It's only enzymes to digest waste, so there's nothing toxic in there. I do know it's safer than using bleach (if you're only trying to get rid of odor, etc, because the enzymes DO NOT sanitize!), as bleach mixed with ammonia (urine) can make a really hazardous gas. Vickie, Nope, doesn't hurt the dogs. :) I feed it to mine each spring and summer. Works pretty well. I get mine in 50# bags, and it's really not that expensive, about $30 per bag, but when you consider how much fly sprays, ointments, etc. are.... Good luck, both of you! You'll have to let me know if it has worked for you if you try it.

I have read previous post about the diatomacious earth. Where do I find it? Flies are just horrid here in summer and I live in town. I would hate for my neighbors to pitch a fit and blame my dogs for the flies. Even though I know it has more to do with dirty dumpsters around here than anything. Your right that $30 is nothing, if it can do all you say. Much easier than spraying every day or even twice a day. I would just love to have NO flies for once.

I found one place that sells it but its called Concern and used for the same issues as described above, not swimming pool use. The problem is, it is $10.99 for a 4lb bucket. That would take allot of buckets to get us through the summer. I am curious if the ingrediants are the same as what they use for the pools and if I can find it at a pool supply store instead??? Does anyone know or should I make more phone calls and ask more questions somewhere else? I'm hopeing this will catch on and it will be easier to find soon.

http://www.dirtworks.net/Diatomaceous-Earth.html#anchorfossilshellflour There's a link for anyone looking for it online, rather than a local feed store. No, the swimming pool stuff is not the same grade, and should not be used in animals. I hope this helps! :) -Melanie

Well I found it for bug use and got 4lbs just to look up the company online for uses. The feed store guys didn't want me to feed it to the dogs but one guy said he used it 20 years ago and he also knew the pool grade wasn't the same. Thanks VFH I will look at that site for more info later. Puting together my Dyson Vac right now and using that puppy ASAP. =D
