Renz, I think the Vari Kennels might be the safest overall. I'll try to find on the net if those big heavy wooden crates with metal doors are still available. Many of the AKC handlers used them. They were very heavy, it took 2 strong people to lift one and they were very expensive. Does anyone else know the brand I'm talking about?

Two other things to think about:
1) For those of you who still aren't convinced about lettting your dog roam in the vehicle. If you are in an accident and are unconscious or semi-conscious and rescue folks are trying to assist you. When your dog is perceived to be a threat to those rescue personnel law enforcement will more than likely take whatever means are necessary to eliminate that threat. They do not care that it was only trying to protect you.
2) If you are not anchoring that crate down it may become a projectile.

Renz, I tried to find those wooden crates on the net, but it looks like they are no longer available. However I did find a site where you can purchase custom made wooden and metal crates that look pretty sturdy.

OK Spook101 - tell me more - what are you saying? They will harm my dog?????????Because I want to do this right.........and Blitzen - I love those- well crafted kennels - what would you choose new wooden crate or new vehicle (like a hummer)- I love my Land Cruiser but if there is a make (auto) out there that has airbags in the end gate area and on the sides - I want to know about it.

How about one of these crates?

I've seen similar ones other places.

Renz, I'm just saying, you need to anchor the crate also.

I'd buy the crate, Renz. I'd love to have a bigger, safer vehicle than my Blazer, but I'm retired now so can't afford one LOL.

The crates on the Leerburg site look very sturdy, but they would probaly get hot in the summer time, so you might need a fan.
