The amount stated above of US$3,000.- is about right if the frozen semen has been imported and shipped from a European country. The amount does not include the stud fee just the expenses of shipping, custom, AI procedure etc. The container must be returned within a very limited time. It means flying the container back to its original destination usually required withinb 10 days. Shipping/flying a nitrogen container means shipping dangerous goods and the price is accordingly. There is still frozen semen sitting all over Germany in storage from the time when it was permitted to use frozen or chilled semen. Hopes have not diminished and the semen will not go bad. But, unless you want to breed an unregistered litter, you better not touch the stuff right now. Germany will not register a litter, and shipped over here will get the seller/breeder and all connected into trouble. There are still breeders working on a solution, but...... Litters from AI surgical or natural are small and depending on breed average between one and three puppies. Reports on higher numbers usually cannot be verified on the American continent. Registration applications are complicated and take more time and money than the average litter. The Scandinavian countries, don't know if all of them, can ship frozen semen and you can get it registered on the American continent. There may be other countries but not Germany or Austria.

lrose, I would be VERY careful in What Breeder and What stud you use if you chose to go the "AI" way. I recently was talked into an AI situation from a supposed "breeder" here in the USA that was a bad experience all the way around. For one, the bitch did not conceive after doing 4 progesterone tests on my end insuring the timing was right, having the bitch in perfect health and having her updated on shots, exams, and she was a 3 year old in prime shape. Second, the "stud owner" informed me the paperwork that came with the puppy pack with the chilled semen she wanted hidden from my vet! I came to find out that the dog was not registered with the AKC and not DNA'd either so the stud owner did not want the vet to know what stud was being used cause apparently the stud must be DNA'd IF you expect to register your litter with an AI insemination "breeding" with the AKC. Third, progesterone test results were delayed due to weather one time, a weekend the next time and everything started falling apart. Then, the "stud owner" shipped my vial of semen over 1700 miles away in the opposite direction of the country by mistake? and of course I never saw that semen shipment and am still being charged for it regardless. Also, then the "stud owner" started adding on additional charges never discussed. Like charges to have the sperm picked up to ship or to take it to have it shipped, charges to register her stud with the AKC, charges to pay to have him DNA tested with the AKC and all sorts of addition charges that were never discussed. Thank God my female didn't conceive! I can only imagine what hidden charges the "stud owner" would pull out of her hat if and when it came time to register this litter. She also informed me the first semen sample had to be done when she had a minute so the collection was taken in a Taco Bell cup! Geez, nice sterile conditions eh? The progesterone tests I had done cost me $73.00 X 4 $292.00 not counting the bitches cytology, health exams and shot updates, and additonal care prior to her coming into heat. Then there is the cost of the AI with the vet at $70.00 the first one and $56.00 each for any additional visits for insemination. So, my suggestion would be MAKE SURE you know WHO you are dealing with before you even consider dealing with this type situation, it could bite you in the "you know what" and just leave your female enjoying another 6 months vacation time.
