Totally agree. I would never force a breeding, nor would I A/I a dog who couldn't get it done. If they wouldn't breed without human intervention, they shouldn't breed.

Nevdev is not the op, so why address them?

by GSDNewbie on 06 October 2013 - 15:10
because the op will see perhaps his advise is not the best route to jump to and will consider everything said as well as maybe educate the other people who read this

Trust your dog, if he is not interested, then don't become "proactive" in the breeding process. If he needs help then there may be something wrong with him or the female.

Unfortunately "breeding from the hand" as it is called in Europe is common practice. When I buy stud I always make sure that he can breed naturally. However if the dog was bred from the hand before he expects the help even so he is "normal" but acts like an idiot if he is not helped again. That does not necessarily mean that there is anything wrong with such dog.
So this situation is not so straight forward as you may think.

1. have the vet check to see that the dog's penis and sheath are not connected.
2. have vet ejaculate the dog to make sure everything is in working order, do a sperm count.
3. have vet check female for structural issues.
4. have vet check progesterone level of female to make sure she is ready to take the male.
female is ready and male cannot do the deed, consider spay and neuter..........
if they cannot figure out how to make puppies or are unwilling to make puppies, they don't need to be reproducing.
