Anybody here doing the HGH in real life?

by GSDNewbie on 25 September 2013 - 15:09
My dogs grandsire did it here in the states. I have worked a previous bitch on amish farms to gain skills towards it before I moved away from Path Valley. Sadly it is difficult in the states unless you hire the main man for it and send your dog or can readjust your life to do it yourself in that region and I am unable to do either. My current dog, is my 24/7 service dog, so anything he achieves is by my side with me as his handler.

I would be interested in trying it, and I think the guy I train with could help me with it, only problem is that he does not have 200+ sheep. :P

If you can work any sheep. I highly recomend it... it is fun and the dogs have a blast! It is awesome to see them back in their original purpose and seeing that instinct kick in.

Did you try and search in this database. There used to be some very nicely done videos on here for HGH.
Maybe some of the administrators know where to find them?
Editing my post because I just found this link - you will find that interesting:

Some of the Yahoo groups (like tending dogs) have pretty good explanations of the similarities and differences, beyond just the number of sheep.
Also The HGH Facebook page that Ulf has <may> be a good resource.
I have a small flock now and hoping to increase the size to at least 30 (maybe 50) to work C-course. Certainly not true large flock tending but watching the dogs work is awesome. Like schutzhund, it becomes a lifestyle though, and not just a hobby.

There is a small HGH club in Northern NJ that has been holding annual trials, though there's a risk the club is going to end up folding because it is so small. But I doubt that there's any significant difference between upstate NY and Northern NJ when it comes to travel time from where you are, Dawulf.

Momosgarage--- Could you elaborate on AHBA applying for AWDF membership? That is a VERY interesting factoid and I would be more than interested in following up.

@gagsd4 actually there is not much, just some meeting minutes posted on the web from 2012, showing AHBA having guest status:
http://www.awdf.net/05-22-13%20March%2017,%202013%20Meeting%20Minutes.pdf
http://www.awdf.net/August%2026,%202012%20Meeting%20Minutes.pdf
http://www.awdf.net/03-23-13%20December%2010,%202012%20Meeting%20Minutes.pdf
http://www.awdf.net/05-22-13%20April%2029,%202013%20Meeting%20Minutes.pdf
http://www.awdf.net/awdfboard.html
However in meeting minutes from 2013 it talks about AWDF helping AHBA get FCI judges. As far as I know FCI judges in the USA only judge HGH, I could be wrong so someone "in-the-know" feel free to chime in as needed:
http://www.awdf.net/2013%20AWDF%20Annual%20%20Board%20Meeting%20MINUTES.pdf
and a discussion on another working dog forum:

Alsom, nobody I know involved in AHBA knows much about whats happening either, some are actually kind of angry at the chain of events. I think they simply don't know about the HGH and the relevancy/purpose of scorebooks. I think if something does eventually happen, it will be a great leap forward.

Momo- thanks for taking the time to reply.
I emailed Michelle Testa and will be looking forward to her reply. I do think there are more than just the HGH titles that AHBA members would be interested in having int'l recognized. I <think> the Beauceron people were campaigning for a French/Belgian style herding title.
Wondering.......
