Slamdunc, at least you're in a postion to be able to stop them and cite them if necessary. All I can do is a slow boil as I see them driving down the roadways here. And the law enforcement here can't be bothered with it--I've watched both the local sheriff's deputies AND the State Troopers ignore these situations, and it wasn't like they were on their way to a call when they do it...they're just cruising down the highway, looking for traffic violations they can pull over.
It doesn't help that everyone is related to everyone else around here, either by blood or marriage or both.

Hey, this is FL where some live and die by the Stand Your Ground law; look at someone wrong here and you're likely to be staring at the business end of a weapon. If a redneck wants to haul his dogs around in the back of a pick up, so what, the law doesn't care; it's just a dog and its HIS/HER dog. Did you see the video of the cops killing the Rottie? Happened in FL too. I thought PA was over the top...til I moved to Tampa Bay. A few months ago we were at a restaurant near Ft DeSoto state park. The big attraction in the parking lot was an open circus wagon parked in the sun containing 2 bengal tigers on their way to Big Cat Rescue in Tampa. The wagon was being hauled behind a pick up truck and was heading up the interstate to the rescue. The driver put on quite a show of petting the tigers through the bars. Had one taken off his arm, it probably would have been killed. Some people just don't get it.
Tethering a dog in the bed of a pick up isn't a brilliant idea either. Sometimes they jump out and get dragged along side the vehicle and/or hang themselves. Dogs should not be allowed to travel in the bed of an open pick up unless they are crated period.

Two weeks ago, while Bosco and I were waiting at a red light to cross the road (we were pedestrians), a car stopped a few feet behind us. The GSD in the car jumped out of the open car window and ran at us barking and growling. I put Bosco in a sit-stay and stood between him and the attacking dog; we are regularly charged by off-leash small dogs so Bosco understands the procedure. It was an incredibly stressful situation - all I could do was yell for help while I waited for the owner to get out of his car and retrieve his dog (he had no control of his dog). I'm now very wary while I wait to cross the road.

Pepper spray and a wiffle ball bat.

I was following a truck with a malamute loose in the back; this was before the cross-tie law was in effect; the guy turned and the dog bounced out of the pickup and hit the ground like a bouncing rubber ball; the guy just kept going. But the dog hit the ground like a ball and rolled and tumbled many times before he stopped tumbling; had to hurt. Totally irresponsible. I started honking to wake the idiot up that was driving. He finally noticed that the dog was gone and went back to get him.

We were in the Keys a few weeks ago. A guy was riding a bike on busy Rt 1 with 2 yorkies in a backpack. It was very hot, no shade anywhere. One of the dogs either fell or jumped out and was running to try to catch up with the idiot. We had to blow our horn and tell him he lost a dog. There is just no accounting for the stupidity of some dog owners.

I remember when I first moved here for school, I was following behind a small S-10 type pickup truck with 2 big beautiful Goldens in the back amongst the giant inflatable water toys and water skis (how they had room???) when they both fell/jumped out of the bed to go after an elderly lady walking her small dog while the owner accelerated from a stop sign. One ended up hitting the trailer hitch and tearing a bleeding flap of skin from the top of his head and laid there unconscious, the other got a good bleeding road rash and still managed to knock down the lady and start shaking her dog. The owners jumped out and grabbed the dogs, literally throwing them in the bed of the truck and taking off, never checking on the lady. I got the plate and ran to the lady, she was ok as was her dog miraculously. I noticed a Attorney Bar Association sticker and an "I heart Attorneys" on the bumper. I called the city PD to report it and was told that since it occurred so close to the city/county line, they would not send anyone out because the owners would be at the boat ramp and long gone in a boat most likely. I said "so, the truck with the plate should be there and I can give you a description of the two men". They were not interested, I was stunned.

LOL that's not too hard to figure out, is it?

Whenever I see a dog in a pick-up bed, I think of that episode of Emergency vets, where a dog had been tethered and jumped out of the truck, catching his tail under the rear wheel. They carried the poor guy in, laying on a gurney, staring at his disconnected tail lying in front of him!

Or if they jump out tethered and hang themselves, surely there are better ways to transport an animal; how about a crate secured down in back of a pickup preferably a Vari kennel- Dah??
Maybe it's a macho thing... The big scarey dog, the big truck??? Although I never see anyone getting a ticket or being sited for it either. so maybe they are just too damn busy with texters, etc. DUI's and chasing the bad guys, god knows we have plenty of all of those around here. Bye for now Nan
