It would be nice if the "owner" could describe the dogs/line, so that people less familiar with these lines could learn and appreciate them..

Caro vom Allerswald and Butta vom Bungalow... yes, that has got to be one of ours. Though I was three years old in 1982. It's a combination my father would breed and there is no other "Barenfang" GSD kennel out there. The reason it's just an a is because they do not have the A with the two dots and probably don't know that you can replace it with AE. Wink Smile

@Sunsilver, the irony of our dogs being the very foundation of the Shiloh Shepherd is mindblowing. Teeth Smile

@Hexe, I thought about it. Even thought about having a litter since my best female is in standing heat but didn't go through with it...

Baerenfangs, no, not a foundation dog. The foundation dogs were 4 American-bred females. He was an outcross to freshen up a gene pool that was getting dangerously inbred.

Forgot to add: he was black and had a long stock coat.

Ah thank you for clearing that up. I was told by a friend who is big into the Shiloh Shepherds that everyone knows the dog that you were talking about. It was quite a shock to actually see that. It's one of those things you never expect. I'm generally not sure what to think about Shiloh's or King Shepherds or all the other oversized breeds that are supposed to be better and healthier than our beloved Shepherds.

You seem to have a lot of insight into the history of the Shiloh Shepherd and I love that kind of knowledge. So thank you for sharing it with us.

Baerenfang has made a significant contribution to working lines.  Fricka Vom Baerenfang is the mother of Ina Vom Haus Gaurd.  Ina is the mother of Nick Vom Heiligenbosch.

Baerenfangs Erbe

Not speaking of all the other dogs that were produced and left their mark.

Guddu, back then,  Gildo was extreme on the field, as a family dog, however, he was the best dog you could have wished for.
He produced tough, resilient dogs, well balanced dogs though they could be head strong. He also produced a lot of herding instinct and hunt drive. As a matter of fact they did exactly what Shepherds are known to do, they ran a boarder/fence line and did it instinctively, without ever having been trained to do, with our horses. There is a lot of true power in those dogs. They are bold and outgoing with a beautiful off switch. The dogs produced were what is called "real dogs" and what people say is getting harder and harder to find. The true working dog, not a sport dog. My father didn't breed to please everyone elses wishes. He bred what he thought was right. He wanted strong dogs and that is what he produced.
He is a walking encyclopedia of dogs. You give him a name, chances are he knows the dog personally and can tell you the dogs strengths and weakness, has possibly handled the dog himself or had the dog on the sleeve. He can tell you things about dogs that only the real old school people would know. He's got the kind of knowledge a lot of people are lacking today.

Thank you...sometimes I wish the old timers would write a book for posterity...no otherway to capture that info ?.

My second policedog was a Mex vom Barenfang son,Gildo grandson.Very strong nerves.Tracked because he loved to track and never backed away from a fight but could be handeled off leash amongst children or other dogs with minimal supervision. This is my definition of discernement!
Several of his half brothers were also placed as PSD in eastern states of the USA.

Erbe,
The SV papers I have also spell the name with an "a".
I'm trying to resize the scan so it will upload for you to look at..  without it being to small to actually read.

I had a grandaughter of Jenny.  Her offspring are part of my homebred line.
Adam Kuhn appears to have imported Jenny, all those years ago.. I saw Ullah, the daughter, when I was there breeding to Rex. He sent me two Ullah offspring some years ago.. Rocket and Reisa.

The dominance of type is very strong in the lines..  reverse masks, very long lived and sturdy, and a certain stubborn determination to complete a task (and not in a bad way, either).
If there is anything I can help you with, please let me know.
