Pannus is a seen fairly often in South Africa, mostly in high altitiude and high UV areas. It is certainly unique to GSD here. Genetics surely do play a small role, as they do in everything, but the above factors must be the trigger. I have been breeding for nearly 20 years and know that it has occurred on occassion. However, the lines are very rarely related, and without exception, an imported sire has been used. I know that in humans the condition pterigium is very similar (I have it) and using a homeopathic product has helped me a lot. (Tibb OpthaCare) However it does not seem to work so well on my dog. Does anyone know of a homeopathic remedy for Pannus?
Cyclosporin and PredForte are the SA recommended meds, and do work well but are scarily expensive.
