They are sold because there is a market for them. Many people prefer to purchase a young adult or adult dog who's been pre-limed or Hip certified. 8wk old pups are too much of a crapshoot, young adults or adults you know or have a pretty good idea of what you're going to get (ie. hips, conformation, working abilities etc.). To get the good ones its all about who you know IMO.

Maybe they just have enough breeding stock already ? I purchased 2 females as pups and now I'm offering them for sale into good PET homes because they did not turn out to be what I had thought they might. So these girls are almost a year old, great temperaments but not the "style" of dog I really like. so for me it's just a personal prefference thing, nothing wrong with eighther of them, But I'm not keeping them. I have enough dogs, why would I not want to see them go to good homes where they can be the "Center" of attention here there are many to give the attention to and yes they all spend time with us in our house, But why not let them have a house all they're own ?

Everyone has their own reason for selling a dog. There are many different reasons, but it has to be looked at on an individual basis.

Just be aware that many of the adults sold may have problems and not be of top quality. Take your time and go visit the kennel(dog) before you buy it. I have seen many excellent dogs for sale here on PDB but I have seen many poor poor quality too.

DR, I agree of course, go see the dogs when you can it avoids all kinds of issues, However 2 members of the board here will call you all kinds of bad names for suggesting that someone goes and looks at a dog, LOL There are many reasons for selling dogs as adults, I know a lady who had several dogs thriving in training, breeding, and local work in schools, and nursing homes, I mean this lady did it all, She gave every bit as much as she received when it came to her dogs, Well her hubby fell ill and it became too much for her to manage him, he needed full time care, and the doggie things she had going, one of them had to be reduced in order for her to even survive, So she sold the quanity of her dogs, placed some into the caring hands of volunteers for therapy dogs, and some into k-9 programs, and so on, And she has a manageable amount of dogs for the time she has available. basically Sh*t happens, and sometimes reduction is the cure.

Many times u save a pup to watch it and observe the line and what it can do and then at 1year old u see what u wanted to know, good temperament, great drive, full grips, a fun dog, wants to work, wants to track, wants to be # 1 dog so u offer it to someone on a list u have waiting for males dogs over 6 mos old because some people do not like the puppy deal" of potty training, chewing , and all that goes with a puppy and they can see at 1 year with a prelim what they are gonna have 10 years down the road and its not such a gamble.....that one way of looking at selling an older pup.......once I keep on longer than 1 1/2 I wont sell it unless my family determines Im unfit and lost It .....HAHAHAHA I have to haave enough gsd's to carry my casket!!!!!!

You are right about people not appreciating something they get for free. I don't really recommend it as a general rule. It costs a lot of money to raise good dogs, to say nothing of time and labor. That is worth a lot, probably more than most of us get for the dogs.

Why I would BUY an older pup or young adult: I have and know others who purchased an 8 wk old pup, raised, trained, titled and fell in love with him/her only to fail OFA at 2yrs old. It was a horribly disheartening experience.

As yellow rose mentioned. Many people don't want to deal with a young puppy. The time, energy, and sharp little puppy teeth can be too much for some. This results in people looking for a young, started dog. Or even a mature dog that has settled down a bit. And as GSDfan said, a lot of time and energy and love only to find out you have a pet that may or may not have a long happy life. Not to mention what it can do if you had planned on a sport dog. There's another group that buys adult dogs. Somebody raising a puppy and bringing it up through training and titling may want an adult dog that has been there, done that to learn with. Not old and slowing down, but in it's prime, trained and ready to teach a newer handler. This is so much better for the young dog coming up. Green dog, green handler can result in too many mistakes.

absolutely animules, it is much easier for a novice to learn the sport of Schutzhund from a started or already trained adult (provided its a half decent dog who's not handler aggressive). There is so much for the new handler to learn, it can be difficult to learn and train a pup from scratch at the same time.
