It never ceases to amaze me what dogs just seem to know. My middle dog always knew well in advance when my son or I were going to get a migraine, neither of us would even have the aura yet. Ronin would start gently whining and lick where our migraines usually start. Once my son would go to bed with his migraine, Ronin would gently crawl into his bed and croon so soothingly (he did the same anytime my son was sick or injured). Ronin could smell infection and had indicated on this patient's knee when the patient brought her dog to obedience class with her husband. Ronin began sniffing and licking her knee. This patient's MRI was clean (infection developed after the MRI was taken) and had no elevations in CRP, white blood count, etc, nothing to indicate infection. My surgeon friend found a pocket of infection that was encased by a membrane when she scoped the knee. My surgeon friend was so impressed with Ronin that she would have him come to her office and "clear" people for surgery who agreed to this. Ronin could also smell when my good friend's cancer came back and whined and licked the base of her head where her cancer was located (my friend went the next day for tests and sad to say, it was back, she is ok now). Loki knew when our neighbor was having a heart attack well before any symptoms appeared, he knew when our friend's father was going to have a stroke, he would whine to go outside when our other neighbor, who developed dementia, would wander away and Loki would bring her back. Isis knows when someone is catching a cold or getting the flu, she sticks to them like glue and whines. Both Ronin and Isis knew when we euthanized Loki (our vet was an hour drive) and according to the neighbors, started howling pitifully at 13:10 (1:10 pm when Loki died) and kept it up for about 15 minutes (to this day, I can't take one without taking the other, they will not tolerate being separated). Ronin is my weather dog, he has never been wrong in 11 years and is accurate to within 10 minutes. Dogs are simply amazing in so many ways.......
