Rear- YES!
they get caught in weirdest places, example i was walking on a bridge in a downtown park, its one of those metal bridges (i might take a picture of it next time i walk on it) its over a stream and my girl gets really low to go over it because of rushing water under neat and noise of vibrating metal (when someone else was walking on it including me) and because she was walking really low her dew claws kept getting hooked on the metal it was the weirdest thing, i kept them trimmed but the nail was not hallow till the very end and so the hook of a nail was still there...so it added to the issue of crossing over a bridge, she also kept getting hooked on the deck boards depending on how she was laying and when she gets up, not to mention the rugs, if she was stretching you can get nail get hooked in carpet loops so we had them removed during her hip surgery, if you can combine it with some other procedure like spaying or x rays when they are already sedated it is cheaper...and you will need to keep bandages over it for a week or so...that is if your dog already mature...
here are some pic.
