To cage dry a dog, I (or my groomer) puts it in a suitably sized crate, and attaches the special cage-drying attachment to the hose (clips onto the cage wire.) Of course, the parts of the dog facing away from the dryer don't get dry, so you have to take the dog out and finish it on the table.

I have a Metro Air Force Commander (small orange one). I normally use it to get the coat mostly dry and get the dead hair out on my LC, especially when the weather is not that great - but I never, ever use it indoors LOL. . Great on a dry dog to blast out dead coat too. It doesn't dry out the coat .

It's called a Furnatio! or a Fur Storm and yes every single thing inside will have a nice think coating of loose fur.  That's why now that i'm retired i use my pickup truck. But a picnic table works well also.

I haven't tried it with my current dog but my last dog would launch at the blow dryer at the self-serve dog wash at Petco trying to kill it.  It got pretty ugly at times...lol.  I don't like cage dryers...google "cage dryer danger".

Abby, I forgot to say it but at the bottom of my post that what I was talking about--blowing them out dry when they are shedding.
OK this is the deal about cage dryers. There are some that are like the force dryers we are talking about--there are others with heat--those are the dangerous ones--IMO--and yes I have personally known of a dog that died at a shop from being overheated. So I definately wouldn't reccomend one of those. And I hear people giving advice about using human dryers. They are too hot for a dog's skin and can burn one. Aside from te fact that thy don't put out enough force to dry a shepherd or husky.

I agree with Vonissk If your using a regular metal or even plastic dog cage and a box fan the dog will not be in danger of over heating. And if you research none of the dog that died were normal healthy animals with natural noses like shepherds. They were english bulldogs, pugs and some tiny messed up yorkies. The heated cage dryers are just not safe. But room temp air is not going to harm any critters.
Human hair dryers are too hot and too low a volume to be used on anything but little puppies that need warm air to dry them quickly so they don't chill.
And yes we have all worked with those idiots dogs that must "Kill" the force dryer. Because that evil thing must DIE!!!! >:D

Air Force cage dryer is low volume and slow. The larger Air Force dryers work well. They are not cheap. Cheap is a shop vac or leaf blower. Gets the job done in no time. Don't laugh until you have tried one.

I only use human hair dryers to hand dry a dog, and ONLY on low heat!  I am constantly fluffing the hair with my hand as I dry, so I can feel if it's getting too hot.

Would never use one to cage dry a dog. They aren't powerful enough for that, plus the risk of either the dryer OR the dog overheating!

Abby, my dryer is an orange Air Force Commander, too.

Dog1 has it in the bag.  For years I struggled with trying to find a good dryer.  Then one day while blowing leaves out of the driveway, my dog comes up and wants to play.  So, that's when it started.  Then, one day while giving him a bath, I decided to try the leaf blower again.  Damn (pardon the French), it worked like a charm and in half the time, I was able to get all his undercoat completely dry!!  Yahoo!!  You gotta try it - amazing!  If you're dogs will let you, it's the only way to go ;-)
