In a word, the problem is,
Dependency.

Constant cuts to our education. If we funded education more and paid teachers what they are really worth (think about it, they educate your children and are with them most of the day, the teachers should be the best of the best and paid accordingly), I believe we would be way better off. As George Carlin said "...government wants people just smart enough to run the machines and fill out the paperwork..." And that is government as a whole with some politicians wanting under educated people more so than others.

That sounds good but does not work and has been the same method tried for over 30 years around Chicago and suburbs.
Now people can't afford the taxes, gov is broke, and schools haven't improved.

Public schools can't compete with private or home schooled.

Other countries spend more on teacher salaries and education than the United States and it shows in achievement scores

I do not know how truthful this is, but......

During Obama's 1st term, he was reviewing something about our borders/border patrol and saw information about cattle guards. He then proceeded to complain about the waste of money and demanded that all cattle guards should be fired.
